In the lab: The gemological microscope

The most important instrument in a gemological laboratory remains the microscope. Long before advanced spectroscopy, careful observation revealed inclusions: crystals, growth structures, and other internal features that record how a stone formed.

These features can indicate treatment, reveal synthetics, and contribute to origin determination. Despite the availability of modern analytical tools, microscopy remains a critical step.

However, interpretation is key. The same inclusion may appear differently depending on lighting and orientation. Experience is essential to understanding what different features represent. Instruments provide information, but it is the trained gemologist who interprets the clues.
