Tea holds a special place in the lives of people across all ages, whether it’s a carefully brewed pot of Pu’er or Longjing, or a trendy cup of bubble tea or hand-pressed lemon tea. Yet once the essence of the leaves has been enjoyed, the spent tea is usually discarded without a second thought.

A group of young innovators saw potential in this overlooked “waste” and transformed it into opportunity by regenerating used tea leaves into new materials that can replace wood, plastic, and traditional paper, opening a world of sustainable possibilities.

Rumah Kechik, which translates to “small house,” traditionally refers to a modest outbuilding designed to support the functions of a main residence. True to its name, it functions as an extension of Baba House Melaka, adapting three 200-year-old shophouses categorized as a UNESCO Heritage building to house a hotel restaurant, a gym, and a function room.

"The building did not need any overtly conspicuous design, it already had so much character" – Jujurwork

Instead of demolishing this piece of history, she chose to celebrate it. The original Hock Bee Bros. signage has been preserved, acting as a memory capsule for Kuantan.

Else Kuala Lumpur Hotel 🏨
One of Else’s co-founders, Chen — a trained architect — sees the hotel as playing a key role in the holistic growth and revitalization of Chinatown. 𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐤𝐰𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐇𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐞: 𝐅𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝’𝐬 𝐂𝐥𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐑𝐞𝐯𝐚𝐦𝐩 𝐨𝐟 𝐚 𝟑𝟓-𝐘𝐞𝐚𝐫-𝐎𝐥𝐝 𝐇𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐑𝐚𝐰 𝐏𝐥𝐲𝐰𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐤𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤

A single-story house, left untouched for years, was given a stunning transformation. What began as simple roof leak repairs evolved into a thoughtful redesign—replacing the entire roof and reinforcing it with a sturdy perimeter beam. By reimagining the roof trusses flooded the home’s deep interior with natural light, turning a dim space into a bright, airy sanctuary.

The redesign introduced skylights in the living, dining, and kitchen areas, while a central courtyard seamlessly connected the guest and master bathrooms. Without expanding the footprint, we optimized the layout—enhancing flow with foyer spaces, opening the living area to lush gardens, and giving each bedroom an ensuite bathroom with private garden access. Exposed brick walls and raw plywood added warmth and sustainability, blending durability with timeless charm. The result? A harmonious retreat where indoor and outdoor living intertwine effortlessly.
