🚨 IT SOS ALERT: IT LOOKS LIKE A PDF, BUT CHECK THE FILE EXTENSION!
📩 “Tolong buka komputer dan semak ya.”
(Please open your computer and check.)
Recently, a client contacted 𝙄𝙏 𝙎𝙄𝙁𝙐 urgently at night after opening a suspicious attachment received through WhatsApp Desktop.
⚠️ What made this file suspicious?
The filename started with “PDF_”, making it look like a PDF document. However, the actual attachment ended in .zip — it was a compressed file, NOT a PDF!
Thinking the file came from someone he knew and was meant for him, the client opened it.
Shortly afterwards, his laptop started behaving strangely. An unexpected D: drive appeared and could not be removed. 😰
𝙄𝙏 𝙎𝙄𝙁𝙐 immediately advised him to power off the computer and take the necessary next steps.
Although the exact cause still requires technical investigation, this incident is a timely reminder that an unexpected attachment from a familiar contact is not automatically safe.
🛡️ HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF
✅ Check the full file extension. A filename beginning with “PDF” does not mean it is a PDF file.
✅ Be careful with ZIP and RAR files. They can contain malicious programs or scripts. Never open or run their contents unless you have verified the file.
✅ Verify with the sender first. Call them through another trusted channel, even if the message comes from a friend, colleague or business contact.
✅ Already opened a suspicious file? Disconnect the computer from the internet and contact your IT or cybersecurity support provider immediately.
✅ Never ignore unusual device behaviour! ⚠️ Especially if your handphone or computer suddenly becomes unusually slow, runs at high processing activity, or gets very hot without a clear reason. These symptoms can have other causes, but if they occur after opening a suspicious file, take them seriously and seek technical assistance.
