Last year and this year, Brownline UK worked with Peter McCormack & Sons Ltd – an OCU group company – on a crucial project on the northern tip of Scotland. A total of four landfall drills were carried out to bring ashore subsea cables connecting the Orkney Islands to the Scottish mainland. ⚡

The two pairs of parallel HDDs were drilled through extremely hard rock formations and fault zones. Absolute accuracy was required to keep the pilot holes on the planned trajectory and ensure precise punch-outs in the seabed. 🎯

We were able to deliver that accuracy using the Drillguide Gyro Steering Tool. For the landfall exit, we also deployed our latest innovation, Drillguide Autopilot, which gave the client flexibility and autonomy in completing the works. 💡

𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗮 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗼 𝗼𝗳 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 Double M Construction Group Ltd! 📽️

In April, Brownline Canada surveyed this job for the installation of a CO₂ pipeline below a wooded swamp. With this pipeline, the CO₂ will be transferred from a gas facility to an injection site to store the gas underground (Carbon Capture & Storage).

This was a challenging HDD crossing that involved complex curves, varied soil conditions and limited surface access in the woods. Surveying the job with the Drillguide Gyro Steering Tool helped overcome these challenges and resulted in a highly accurate pilot drill! 🎯

Throwback Tuesday: HDD outfall for a whisky distillery on the Scottish isle of Islay 🥃

A year ago, Brownline UK worked with Nicol of Skene to complete an HDD outfall through hard rock layers. With this bore, a wastewater pipeline was installed for a newly constructed whisky distillery. We surveyed the pilot drill with the Drillguide Gyro Steering Tool, resulting in perfect accuracy.

Five years ago this summer, Brownline surveyed its longest HDD crossing to date. Working with Michels Trenchless, Inc. a spectacular 4702 m (15,426 ft) horizontal directional drill was completed under Lake Sakakawea in North Dakota, one of the widest parts of the Missouri River. This highly challenging project is yet to be surpassed as the longest HDD crossing in North America, and it's widely recognized as an exceptional achievement in trenchless construction.

We look back on this project with Tyler Carey, one of Brownline USA's surveyors on this project in 2021. 💬

Tyler: "The sheer size and scale of the project and the job sites were impressive. Running a 24-hour operation on both sides made for its own challenges. However, it also showed how well the Drillguide Gyro Steering Tool can run for long periods and distances without issues."
