An Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity..UPV)tester by MAE
(Manufattura Apparecchiature Elettroniche, an Italian company) is a device used for non-destructive testing (NDT) of concrete and other materials to assess their quality, uniformity, and internal defects like cracks or voids by measuring the speed of ultrasonic waves through them, with popular models like the MAE Cronosonic, offering features like digital displays, data logging, and various testing modes (direct, semi-direct, indirect) to calculate pulse transit time and velocity.

How it works:
1. Principle: It sends ultrasonic pulses through a material and measures the time it takes for the pulse to travel (Time of Flight - TOF).
2. Formula: Velocity = Distance / Time.
3. Components: Includes a main unit, transmitting (TX) and receiving (RX) transducers (probes), cables, and coupling gel to remove air gaps.
4. Process: Gel is applied to surfaces, probes are placed (e.g., direct method on opposite faces), distance is entered, and the instrument calculates the velocity.

What it detects:
• Internal cracks, voids, and honeycombing.
• Material uniformity and quality of hardened concrete, stone, wood, and plastic.
• Assesses concrete strength and condition based on velocity (e.g., faster velocity generally means better quality).
