Why timber?

In a world of fiberglass and concrete, crystal bricks and memory steel, why would we choose to build with wood?

Perhaps it’s because familiarity is comfort.

A simple wood panel can take you back to your school assembly hall, to your childhood churches or temples, to the museums and galleries you visited in the city.

Or perhaps it’s because timber is undeniably beautiful.

There’s visual intrigue in every plank or batten, a configuration of whorls, sap lines, knots, and streaks making up the unique history of a tree that lived in a forest far away.

All materials have their advantages and disadvantages – but we at Featurecraft have a soft spot for timber.

Sometimes, creativity isn’t about loud, expensive visuals.

It’s in the simplest choices.

A panel with a hand-painted design.

A custom red-stained acoustic system.

A batten that tapers and sways with the light.

These subtle touches are a signature written in timber across the walls and ceilings of your space, speaking volumes without emptying the bank or overcrowding the landscape.

At a state-of-the-art forensic mental health facility like E Tū Wairua Hinengaro – Mason Clinic, connectedness and community are key drivers of wellbeing.

Our Featurecraft team kept those objectives front and center as we designed our specialist decorative features for this groundbreaking project.

For example, we contributed custom routed and hand-painted veneered panels that featured colourful cultural narratives, helping uplift the spirit and create a positive environment.

We also created solid American Oak batten screens to enhance privacy and create sheltered zones.

These are small components of the overall environment, but all these little touches add up.

This is a small selection of the custom veneered panels that Featurecraft has created over the years.

Cultural engravings, acoustic perforations, specialised stains – our panels are the base upon which your designs are realised.

Not only do they offer ultimate creative flexibility, but they can also be fire-rated for code compliance and user safety.

The Poutamu pattern represents growth, advancement, and personal development.

A fitting decorative feature for the Mason Clinic, New Zealand’s newest and most advanced forensic mental health facility – and one that Featurecraft was proud to make.

The background is composed of veneered panels, seamlessly joined together to create a warm timber canvas.

The pattern itself is created from Featurecraft’s blue felt. Every cut, every line, every placement had to be just right, as we wanted nothing less than perfection for this important space.

Artist Mei Hill provided cultural design guidance, working closely with tāngata whai i te ora and staff to shape the concepts and narratives that inform the building’s interior design themes.

This is what decorative joinery can accomplish. We’re not just sticking bits of wood together; we’re responding to a design brief and delivering pieces that are perfectly tailored to each unique environment.

These are the feature panels that we created for the Mason Clinic project.

You’re looking at a timber veneered panel with a cultural grooved pattern that required intricate routering to accomplish.

The grooves were hand-painted by our craftspeople, deepening the element of artisanal care that characterizes these panels.

We’re sharing these panels for two reasons: firstly, because they look beautiful, and secondly, because it took a lot of hard work and investment for us to be able to make them.

This is Featurecraft at the present – and we’re dedicated to getting better every day.

So, if you have your own custom joinery ideas, tell us what they are. We’ll figure out how to make them real.

Featurecraft is joining Klein Architects in celebrating the completion of E Tū Wairua Hinengaro – Mason Clinic.

This is the first state-of-the-art forensic mental health facility that New Zealand has built since 1999, and it is the first stage of a long-term masterplan to improve healthcare outcomes for the country.

With an architectural design centered around dignity, connection to nature, clarity of movement, and a calm therapeutic environment, the Mason Clinic exemplifies what healthcare architecture should be.

Featurecraft is proud to provide our custom decorative timber systems – including culturally engraved and hand-painted panels – for this landmark project.

Take a look at the custom ceiling that Featurecraft designed for Mānawa Bay

This is a testament to the power of simple design. A basic triangular shape is used to create a dynamic pattern that spreads out across the ceiling of the dining area, generating visual intrigue and upscaling the aesthetic of the space.

This is how Featurecraft products work. We use natural materials and simple shapes to build high-performing, visually refined decorative pieces.
