Awesome few days at the ADNZ Conference last week with plenty of good conversations about where engineered timber is heading.

Some stand out moments ...

Hearing how architects are really embracing the Prolam Specifier and how it supports them to move more easily from design idea through to a specified structural solution.

The interest in our PLX Portal and PLX Column, our 3D Prolam House model, and the wider possibilities now opening up with Potius as part of the Prolam group.

Seeing people explore the whole picture - not just individual products, but how engineered timber can solve structural challenges and bring timber into the design across a building's interior or exterior.

And, of course, we had a competition winner to celebrate! Congratulations to Jason MacDonald from JMAC architecture, who was presented with a bottle of Greenstone Gin from Kiwi Spirit Distillery by Jesse Wood and Emmerson Deck - with Te Radar joining the fun and adding some suitably sharp commentary.

A fitting prize for an event celebrating New Zealand design: a little Kiwi craftsmanship to go with all the Kiwi architectural ingenuity.

Thanks to everyone who stopped by for a chat, and to ADNZ for another excellent conference.

Meet Alpha, the newest star on our Customer Service Team ⭐

Alpha joined Prolam because our focus on teamwork and continuous improvement stood out to her - and she’s already bringing plenty of both to the role.

For Alpha, good customer service goes beyond getting the task done. It’s about taking ownership, being proactive and making sure customers feel supported from start to finish.

She’s also loving the chance to learn something new every day and, in her words, work with “THE BEST TEAM!”

Outside work, Alpha’s creativity really comes out. She sews, bakes, decorates cakes, and even makes costumes.

Basically, if there’s an idea she can turn into something real - she’s in!

Join us in welcoming Alpha to !

How can engineered timber support your architectural ambition?

That’s exactly the question we're going to be asking at the 2026 ADNZ Conference this week.

We'll be sharing how architects are already using Prolam and Potius in bold, design-led projects and high-performance homes shaped around passive house principles.

And opening the door to new possibilities ...

We’ll be showcasing the latest additions to the Prolam range alongside our innovative PLX bracing range and Potius™ Panels that provide designers with faster, more efficient alternatives to conventional building methods.

John Woodman, Burkley Woodman, Jesse Wood and Emmerson Deck will be there to talk through design ideas, structural challenges and where engineered timber could fit in your next project.

Half an hour of structural testing in half a minute. ⏱️

On Tuesday we put our latest glulam-steel composite portal frame through lateral load testing at Prolab, with engineers from across New Zealand watching in person and via livestream. We were also pleased to welcome Finance Minister Nicola Willis and Katie Milne on site to see the test.

Why test this way? Because the engineers who design with our products know best what works on real projects. Their live feedback helps us refine the system before it’s finalised.

Thank you to everyone who joined us.

Get the Look ♦️ Parenga House

In this striking all-timber home, perfectly proportioned Prolam glulam shapes the roofline, extending from the interior out over the veranda, and framing the outdoor living spaces.

Environmentally friendly H3.2 MCA treatment was an important part of the specification, supporting durability while aligning with architect Hugh Tennent from Tennent Brown Architects considered approach to materials.

Rafters
240 x 63mm Prolam PL12 Beams
7.8m long
Approx. 2.7m cantilever

Barge Board
450 x 42mm Prolam PL8 Beam
4.2m long

Paired Posts
190 x 63mm Prolam PL8 Posts

All of the glulam beams and posts were custom manufactured and supplied in visual grade and finished with a light-coloured Resene wood stain.

What does an award-winning architect choose for his own home?

For Hugh Tennent of Tennent Brown Architects, Parenga House was an opportunity to bring together the principles that shape his work - passive house design, low embodied carbon and a highly considered approach to materials.

Timber sits at the heart of the home, structurally and aesthetically.

Prolam visual-grade glulam forms part of that all-timber approach, with PL8 and PL12 glulam used in the long, cantilevered rafters that run from the interior out over the veranda, the structural barge board and paired posts.

Throughout Parenga House, every material choice has been considered for how it performs, how it contributes to the home’s low-carbon goals and how it shapes the experience of the space.

Prolam fits perfectly alongside that thinking - made in NZ from plantation grown pine, engineered to perform, and designed to be seen.

| Habitat for Humanity, Nelson

Back in 2023, Habitat for Humanity Nelson completed 14 rent-to-buy homes in Stoke - one of its largest local projects at the time.

Prolam glulam was used to create pergolas over the patio areas, giving residents a place to relax, connect and spend time with family, friends and neighbours.

For builder Andy Wells of Tasman Homes, glulam was a great fit for the job:

“The glulam posts work well for pergolas due to their straightness and dimensional stability, and Prolam’s install guides and fixing options also make the build easy.”

A solid option for a repeatable build like this, Andy said each pergola took only a day to complete.

A simple example of how good outdoor spaces can add something meaningful to everyday living in multi-unit residential complexes.

What changes when a townhouse goes to three storeys?

The structural design approach changes.

Three-storey residential buildings sit outside the scope of NZS 3604 and require specifically engineered design. For bracing design, under current interim SESOC advice, the ground floor must use SED bracing elements, while the upper two storeys can use NZS 3604-rated bracing elements at reduced ratings, subject to the conditions in that advice.

So, what can Prolam offer for three-storey townhouse bracing?

For the ground floor, we now offer an SED Column solution for high-capacity engineered timber bracing. On the upper two storeys, there is also scope to use PLX Portal solutions at the applicable reduced bracing ratings.

The important point is that three-storey townhouse bracing needs to be considered as a specifically engineered system.

Our in-house engineering team can work alongside you and your project structural engineer to size and document the solution.

Townhouse project on the drawing board? Keep this close.

Our new Quick Guide to Engineered Timber for Townhouses helps you quickly see where Prolam engineered timber fits in two-storey townhouse designs within the NZS 3604 scope.

It maps the common townhouse design goals and structural challenges to the right engineered timber solutions, from PLX bracing and glulam beams to outdoor structures and Potius floor and wall systems.

And when you’re ready to move from concept to specification, it points you to the tools and support you need - the Prolam Specifier, design and installation guides, GIB EzyBrace® or our engineering team.

Rethink townhouse design and construction with Prolam + Potius
In townhouse construction, every design decision gets multiplied.

A structural detail that is difficult to build once becomes a much bigger issue across multiple units - adding extra site labour, coordination or construction steps.

The flip side? Get the solution right and those efficiencies repeat too.

Prolam provides repeatable, build-ready structural solutions for the places townhouse designs get tricky - open-plan living, larger windows and ranchsliders, and garage openings. With glulam also working for beams, balconies, pergolas and outdoor areas.

Potius takes that same thinking into prefabricated floor and wall systems, helping reduce time and labour on site.

Together, Prolam + Potius help townhouse projects perform on paper, on site and in the market - by bringing three essentials together:

STRUCTURE — proven solutions for bracing and structural support.
SPACE — wider openings and more liveable layouts.
SPEED — efficient, cost-effective construction.
