🔧 Steel or PVC spouting: what's the difference?

It's one of the most common questions we get.

PVC is cheaper up front but it can go brittle in the sun over time, and it comes in set lengths, so there's a join every few metres. Joins are where most leaks start.

We pride ourselves on having a great culture at Continuous Group, and one of the unique experiences we offer our staff and key clients is a backcountry adventure at Ngamatea Station with the Adventures crew.

Three groups headed in this September. Rustic hut living, spectacular scenery, 4WD touring and some excellent Sika hunting, guided by Willie and Greg Duley. Plenty of memories made, good times shared, and venison taken home to feed family and friends.

This is our favourite part of the job. 🏡

🌬️ Looks fine isn’t the same as storm-ready.

El Niño is here, and it’s a strong one. Forecasters expect more westerly winds and stronger gusts across New Zealand this spring.

Wind doesn’t usually rip spouting off in one go. It works away at it. Brackets loosen, joins open up, and fascia behind the spouting takes the strain. Then the next heavy rain finds the weak spot, and the water ends up in your walls instead of your downpipes.

⚠️ Take two minutes to look up before the next big blow:

✅ Spouting sagging or pulling away from the house
✅ Fascia boards cracked, soft or flaking
✅ Water spilling over the edge in heavy rain
✅ Downpipes loose, blocked or not draining

Mesh guard or Flowmate — which one is actually worth it? 🍃

It’s a fair question. There are plenty of leaf protection products out there, and they don’t all work the same way.

Here’s the difference:

Mesh guards cover the top of the entire spouting, keeping leaves and debris out. But over time, they can sag, rust or leave gaps where debris and rodents can get through.

Flowmate takes a different approach. Instead of covering the whole spouting run, it sits directly over the downpipe outlet. Leaves and debris collect around the Flowmate while water continues to flow through.

No mesh to rust. No sagging. No gaps.
