Our Story

HISTORY OF THE SCHOOL

Five decades ago when Butuan was economically booming due to its logging industry, most families were well-off and lived comfortably. In fact, schools were teeming with learners from elementary to college levels. However, there was little consciousness that the head start for character formation is in pre-elementary experiences.

The Missionary Sisters of Mary (MSM) at that time, newly founded sisters of diocesan rights, saw how vital it was for small kids who were often left at home to have access to early education. In June of 1960, Sr. Eleonora Goetnyck, ICM, as early formator of the MSM, started to open pre-elementary classes handled by Miss Violeta Palmis, a graduate of St. Theresa College of Cebu and Mrs. Flaviana Itao of Urios College at the MSM convent. A year after, Sr. Paz Geotina, MSM, the newly professed sister, took over the school. The school was named Sacred Heart Kindergarten School which was the only Catholic preschool institution in Butuan City for a long time.

In 2008, it is renamed Sacred Heart School of Butuan or SHSB after due consultations and legal documentation. On its 48th year of operation and in response to the kind requests from its institutional partners, it has expanded its services to offering Elementary Education and Junior High School as well.

Sacred Heart School of Butuan, a Catholic educational institution, envisions a holistic person, rooted in Christ, imbibing the spirit of Mary, the model disciple, respecting and promoting the integrity of creation and culture, participative in the transformation of Church and society.

MISSION

As we joyfully echo the Magnificat of Mary, we commit to establish systems and processes that promote Christian quality education, provide nurturing environment and engage stakeholders to share responsibilities.

PHILOSOPHY

Sacred Heart School of Butuan, believes in the God of History, who journeys with every individual child and nation towards the New Heaven and New Earth.

Every individual child is endowed by God with free will, innate dignity, rights and responsibilities, and capabilities that need to be developed and respected as they are guided to attain their final destiny.

Every child, interrelated with creation and society, needs transformation for the realization of the Father’s dream of a New Heaven and New Earth.

GOALS and OBJECTIVES

1. Promote Christian quality education

1.1. Update and enhance the curriculum based on the standards of Department of Education and other regulatory institutions;

1.2. Conduct capacity development activities for administrators, faculty and staff to be able to be abreast with the current trends; and

1.3. To implement a monitoring and evaluation system for the effectiveness and efficiency of programs.

2. Provide a nurturing environment

2.2. To promote harmonious relationship among faculty and staff, employees and learners; and

2.3 To undertake support activities that will promote the welfare of the members of the academic community.

3. Establish systems and processes that enhance efficiency of serviced delivery

the efficient management of resources.
