When to Use It (and When Not To)

It is not advised to apply topcoats directly on a substrate. Topcoats in general are designed to adhere to primers. The absence of primer may lead to a number of adverse effects, including but is not limited to the loss of adhesion of the topcoat.

Given that the substrate is bare, applying the correct or recommended primer is best. There are different types of primers that can be used depending on the type of substrate and the topcoat chosen, thus it is best to always check the Technical Data Sheet of the paint product or to consult with the manufacturer for proper product use.

Note: Incorrect application of primer to their designated surface may also lead to loss of adhesion, among other adverse reactions.
