After working with embedded design and programming in Assembly, C and C++ for over 14 years, we discovered a gap in knowledge out there. Most of the questions came from Desktop programmers with none or little hardware knowledge. What microcontroller should I use? Can I use Visual Basic and .NET to write embedded firmware? Desktop developers had become used to ”unlimited” memory and processor power. This often results in choosing a bigger microcontroller than actually needed if you only optimise your code. This planted a seed in my mind, why not write a book around a hardware platform with real hands-on elaborations. The first part focusing on the microcontrollers building blocks and a second part about optimisation and debugging.
