Like the intricate work of a pastry chef, decorative plasterwork invites a closer look. The profile of a cornice or the leaves of a ceiling rose can offer clues to the architectural ideas of its time.

When choosing cornices and ceiling roses, look to the building’s surviving details, alongside the room’s height and proportions.

Here are examples from our customers’ homes, alongside original plasterwork to study and draw inspiration from.

Before central heating, a warm room began with carrying in the wood. Then came the work of lighting the fire, tending it and clearing away the ash.

These everyday tasks left their mark on the furnishings, too. Handles, stands and baskets were carefully shaped, made for use and given a decorative place in the room.

Here, in a turn-of-the-century home in Södermanland, our Pokal set in solid brass stands beside the tiled stove, together with Royal, our firewood basket on small feet. As the autumn evenings draw in, it’s lovely to see these familiar fireside tools taking their place in your homes, ready for another season by the fire.

When electricity first found its way into Swedish homes, turning on the light often meant turning a small rotary switch, usually made of porcelain. Twisted, fabric-covered cables ran visibly along the walls, making the new technology part of the room itself.

Later came the classic toggle switch. Brass, wood and porcelain in black or white all had their place in these early electrical fittings. In our collection, you’ll find switches made to original designs, preserving the shapes and materials of the time.

The kitchen was once a room devoted to work organised around the stove, the sink and the preparation of food. Today, we spend time here in other ways too, but there is still much to draw from the older kitchen’s practical fittings, painted woodwork and carefully considered details.

The house itself often offers a starting point. Its age, original woodwork and surviving fittings can help guide the choice of materials and details as the kitchen takes shape.

Here, we look inside our customers’ kitchens, where taps, hardware and lighting based on designs from around 1900 find their place in daily life.

Many of our traditions centred on candlelight took shape in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Candles were no longer needed for everyday tasks. Instead, they became a way to mark a special occasion.

In rooms where people gathered and entertained guests, candles were lit in crystal chandeliers and candelabras for parties and celebrations. What had once been an everyday source of light, gradually became associated with warmth, beauty and a sense of occasion. It is a role candlelight still holds today.

Here are a few of our favourite candlesticks to light as the evenings grow darker ✨

We’re back at Villa Gadelius, one of our favourite projects, guided by Anna and Andreas, an architect and a designer with a keen eye for detail.

This time, we’re stepping inside their guest bathroom. Careful planning has made room for more than you might expect, including a shower, without the room feeling small at all.

They’ve chosen our York tiles in Almond, an excellent choice, if we may say so ourselves. A traditional tile border and contrasting floor tiles complement them, while nickel details, from the towel rail to the shower fittings, bring it all together.

As we arrive at Långvinds herrgård in Hälsingland, we stop to admire the beautifully decorated wooden façade. With 28 rooms and as many working tiled stoves, there is plenty to discover.

The manor took on its present appearance during a major renovation in 1896. The veranda and decorative woodwork reflect the Swiss style, which became popular in Sweden during the second half of the 19th century.

Inspired by wooden houses in Switzerland, the style brought verandas, wide overhanging roofs and richly decorated woodwork to Swedish homes. Here, the details frame windows and doors and continue along balconies and beneath the roof.

Two close shades of the same colour bring the façade together, a popular way of painting houses around the turn of the 20th century.

A building full of inspiration, with so many ideas to take home.

Even a century-old home needs a few modern comforts.
For their guest WC, Helena and Anders chose our small black-and-white octagonal tiles, a pattern that suits both the house and the small floor space. The beadboard panelling brings a little of the green from the manor’s surroundings indoors. For the mirror and fittings, they chose brass to add a little warmth alongside the classic toilet.
