Great trails don’t happen by accident. They happen when passionate people come together with a shared vision, a plan, and a willingness to make things better.

On January 14, 2026, WMMBA brought a room full of mountain biking changemakers together for a facilitated SWOTT session. Trail Coordinators, Board Members, Youth Program Leaders, event organizers, the League of Michigan Bicyclists, and community partners rolled up their sleeves to talk about the future of our trails.

We reviewed trail surveys, assessed trail conditions, explored project opportunities, challenged assumptions, and had honest conversations about where we are and where we want to go. Combined with feedback from our members, those conversations helped shape something BIG.

Introducing the WMMBA 1-, 3-, and 5-Year Strategic Plan!

This is more than a document. It's our compass. Our shared goals. Our commitment to sustainable trails, stronger partnerships, expanded leadership, and a better mountain biking experience across West Michigan.

But a plan is only as powerful as the people who bring it to life.

WE'RE LOOKING FOR OUR NEXT LEADERS!

WMMBA has THREE OPEN BOARD POSITIONS, and we're ready to welcome new voices, fresh perspectives, and people who want to make a difference.

Our immediate needs include:
✅ Leadership & Project Management
✅ Social media & community Engagement
✅ Fundraising

The trail builders at Johnson Park are very busy putting the finishing touches on the first six miles of trail and the first of three flow lines in preparation for opening weekend October 23-25. We can't wait to see you all at the events to open and enjoy the new trail!

The weekend starts with a ribbon cutting event at 1:00 PM on Friday, October 23 with Kent County Parks, Kent County Parks Foundation, Downtown Grand Rapids Inc., and Grand River Network. They'll officially open the trail and the other fantastic new amenities at Johnson Park.

Then on Saturday morning, October 24, at 10:00AM WMMBA is hosting the inaugural Johnson Park Jamboree where we'll be out riding and celebrating the opening of these fantastic trails.

Check out our Facebook events for more information on both. Many of our great partners and friends will be joining in the celebration!

Johnson Park Update

A LOT is taking shape at Johnson Park!

Restrooms + Shelters: Kent County Parks Department is making big progress near the Green Loop trailhead. This Grand River Greenway Hub will feature tons of parking, paved non-motorized trail access in both directions, open green space, covered shelters, restrooms, and — most importantly — direct access to what is shaping up to soon be one of the best trail systems in West Michigan.

How soon ? We’re working on a date. Stay tuned!

MTB Trail Progress

The Johnson Park Support Team has partnered with Chris Cordle, the signage design maestro behind Mosquito Creek’s signage portfolio.

The focus is clear directional signage and adaptive trail ratings. With multiple intersections, scenic drive crossings, and access points, Johnson Park is being designed so riders can choose their own adventure.

Want to session your favorite section?
Want a shorter loop connecting the best flowy downhills?
Want a climbing-focused adventure?

You’ll be able to do it.

Construction Updates

• 2 of 3 Flow Zone jump lines are roughed in
• One-way return trail is taking shape
• Majority of XC Blue is roughed in and connected
• Original 6 miles remain on track for a Fall opening
• Full 8-mile system to follow later this year

We’ll keep the updates coming as this project moves closer to opening day.

Please continue to respect construction areas, closures, and posted signage.

The wait is getting shorter.

Hammond Hill got an upgrade!

The professionally built trail just outside of Hastings now has a skill zone featuring berms and progressive features as part of a partnership with the City of Hastings and the Barry County Recreation Department. This new loop built by the experts at Flowtrack MTB will be a great addition for skill development alongside the existing trails at Hammond Hill.

Trail Day Recap | Cannonsburg State Game Area

THANK YOU to our incredible WMMBA volunteers!

This crew knocked out another major milestone by replacing/ restoring bridge #5 of 6 at Cannonsburg State Game Area, with sustainability repairs completed at the Section 3 entrance and Section 4 exit.

We had an awesome turnout, including several new faces alongside some of our regular trail legends (Bill Norman). Every volunteer makes a difference, and we're grateful for everyone who showed up ready to work.

A special thank you to our project partners for helping make these improvements possible:
Grand Rapids Chair Company
Eastbrook Homes
Kamps Hardwood

Missed this trail day? No worries! We'll be back at CSGA in August for another volunteer opportunity. Keep an eye on our events page and come lend a hand—it's a great way to give back, meet fellow riders, and help keep our trails in top shape.
