Sutherlands HomeBase is a fourth-generation family-owned lumber, home improvement and hardware store that has been providing our customers quality building supplies at an exceptional value for more than 100 years.
We believe in the hometown values of providing our customers with the best possible service and quality merchandise, while delivering solid value for both our everyday consumer and contractor alike.
Our roots can be traced back all the way to 1873 when brothers Hans and John Dierks went into the lumber business in Walnut, Iowa. Although this business was not an initial success, the lumber business entered our family’s blood and then became our family’s business.
In 1917, Robert Sutherland and his wife, Mae Dierks, started the first Sutherlands in Durant, Oklahoma. They sold materials for house patterns, or blueprints as we call them today.
Over the past hundred years, we have seen a lot of changes. In the late 1800’s, it took horse drawn wagons and teams of mules throughout Arkansas and Oklahoma to haul hand cut white oak lumber to the Dierks’ lumber mills for processing. As the company expanded in the early 1900’s, the Dierks’ business operation had almost forty million feet of thoroughly-seasoned, hand-sawn lumber ready for trade. That lumber was delivered to our customers by a logging railroad that was built on top of Dierks’ white oak railroad ties. Dierks employed more than 2000 people in several states, in the woods and in the mills.
In 1917, we saw another change. The United States entered World War I and our family answered the call to serve our country. The United States government sought to quickly build up its fleet of ships, and Dierks (Dierks-Blodgett) was commissioned as a ship builder to build the five-masted, cargo-carrying schooners. In May 1918, after nine months of construction, the USS Pascagoula was launched, the first in her class of Kerris ships.
Even though the lumber business has changed significantly over the past 140 years, a few things haven’t changed. Our family has been proud to serve its customers’ needs since 1873. Whether it’s building ships for our country to support the war efforts, or simply serving our everyday customers with deeply rooted hometown family values, we are proud to be your lumber, home improvement and hardware store.
So, stop in today and meet with one of our knowledgeable employees that are dedicated to helping our customers.
