Clean up Update: Thank you to all of our customers and community members for your patience and support during this difficult time.

Due to the severity of the fire and the co mingling of building materials during the demolition process on Jan 2nd, the cleanup process has required all parties to work together closely. This included waiting for all six insurance companies involved to officially release the property from any further investigations.

I’m Happy to share that we have finally received the last release letter from the final insurance company. We are now working with a professional environmental company and the city to begin the process toward a safe cleanup.

I understand the concerns from our community and want everyone to know that safety is our top priority. We appreciate your continued patience, support, and understanding as we move forward together toward a safe and efficient cleanup process.

Thank you to our community for being patient while we work through the cleanup. We really appreciate it.

I also want to thank Danco, Dan and his team have been a huge help with guidance and support through all of this.

What’s taking so long:
After the fire department completed their investigation and released the property, the insurance companies then had to do their own investigation before they could release it as well. During that waiting period, we worked on getting bids for cleanup and debris removal.

To access insurance funds, we have to go through a process, and the cleanup bids have come in extremely high , higher than what insurance fully covers.

Next Steps :
We’re in the process of getting an environmental analysis done on the property. Once we have those results, we’ll know where the materials can be properly disposed of and can move forward from there and we can get a more accurate final bid for clean up.

I want to send a huge thank you to Jeff and his crew at The Big Blue Cafe or hosting us for a post-fire team meeting. He fed our entire team on the house, which meant so much to all of us. This is what community is about showing up for each other when it matters.

I’ve known Jeff and his family for over 20 years, and he called right away and said, “I want to feed your team anytime.” That says everything about the kind of people they are. We had such a fun night talked about our next steps, laughed a little, teared up thinking about the memories and just got to enjoy one normal night together.

Thank you, Jeff. We truly appreciate you and everyone at The Big Blue Cafe. And remember, when we spend local, our dollars stay local. ❤️

Fire Community Update

We’ve had several meetings and have turned in all paint and cleaning inventory to the City Mercer-Fraser Companyey’re now working with a hazardous waste consultant to create a plan and bid for proper removal and disposal at approved sites.

All property owners involved are fully committed to getting this cleaned up as quickly as possible. At this time, there is still an active fire investigation, so no one is legally allowed to access or disturb the site due to insurance and safety requirements.

We’ve also been informed that insurance representatives from all affected properties will be meeting soon to help move this process forward.

Thank you for your patience and understanding. Please know we are not sitting back we are pushing every day, along with City Manager Merrit, to get this resolved as quickly as possible.

Update:
Hensel’s Ace Hardware is currently working with our insurance company, local contractors, and the City of Arcata (Manager Merritt). Currently there are many investigation taking place since it was such a large fire we are unable to do anything until all investgations are done. We’re moving as quickly as possible to get the property fully cleaned up and appreciate your patience and understanding as we work through the best solutions.

Thank you to everyone who reached out, offered help, or asked about setting up a GoFundMe. That support means more than you know.

We’ve decided not to do a GoFundMe or any crowdfunding for HENSEL’S .

Instead, we ask our community to shop local and support all of our local Ace stores , all Humboldt businesses and the local businesses who showed up for us with supplies, equipment, advice, and encouragement when we needed it. We still have a long way to go and they will be there every step of the way! It takes a village !

A big thank you to:

🧸And one more thing—we found and rescued our momma bear who has been posted a lot on various social media sites (She used to sit on the top shelf with her cub in the “Candy Store”). You’ll be seeing her back in the hardware store very soon. 🐻

We are having a custom shadow box made to preserve her appearance and ensure she can be safely displayed. She is a powerful symbol of the fire and spirit of our team and our community.

Huge thank you to The Danco Group and Mad Dog Power Wash for jumping in and helping get the store cleaned up and safe so we can reopen tomorrow, Monday the 5th at 7:30am, in our Main Building!

Update: Paint Department Reopening

Hensel’s Ace Hardware will be back under one roof. Our Arcata Color Center (Benjamin Moore Paint), along with cleaning supplies, housewares, gifts, and the candy store, will all be moving into the main Hensel’s Ace building and the Feuerwerker Bldg. Building connected to the Main blg

Danco will start helping us prepare the Feuerwerker Building tomorrow.

We’ll continue to share daily updates. Thanks again for all the support!
