In the heat of the 1936 Berlin Olympics, where the world watched through a lens of tension and nationalism, a remarkable story of friendship and sportsmanship unfolded between two athletes who should have been rivals. Carl “Luz” Long, a German long jumper, was not only competing on home soil but under the watchful eye of the N**i regime, which sought to showcase A***n superiority.
But what happened next would defy all expectations.
During the long jump event, Jesse Owens, the African American athlete whose presence was a direct challenge to N**i ideology, fouled his first two jumps. With just one chance left to qualify, the pressure was immense. It was in this critical moment that Luz Long, rather than standing by, offered Owens some advice on adjusting his takeoff mark.
This small act of kindness from a supposed rival was nothing short of extraordinary. Owens took the advice, and the result? He not only qualified but went on to win the gold medal, setting an Olympic record in the process. Long, who had secured the silver medal, was the first to congratulate Owens, embracing him in full view of the spectators and N**i officials.
Their friendship didn’t end at the stadium; they corresponded for years after the Olympics, with Long’s letters to Owens expressing a deep respect and camaraderie that transcended borders and ideologies. Unfortunately, Luz Long would later be killed in World War II, but the legacy of his sportsmanship lives on, a powerful reminder that humanity and decency can thrive even in the darkest of times.
This story isn't just about athletics; it's about the triumph of the human spirit over prejudice and the unexpected bonds that can form in the most unlikely of places.

Shirley Jane Temple on growing up as the most famous child in the world:
"I stopped believing in Santa Claus when I was six. Mother took me to see him in a department store and he asked for my autograph."
"I was so short that I became an expert in belts and shoes and people's hands and handbags. I learned that I liked the working crew the most, more than the stars. I liked the guys that I worked with very, very much. It was my extended family. The crew worked on almost all of my films. We had a marvelous time. I had a 'Shirley Temple Police Force' and all of the crowd and various celebrities I would have join my force. I was very careful that they kept their badges polished, and if they lost them there was a big fine. If they gave them away, there was a bigger fine. We had just so much fun. I teased them a lot, too, particularly the cameramen, who had a lot of trouble with me."
"When I saw work shoes I would know that that person worked. I was very worried about people with shiny, pointed shoes as a child."
"I class myself with Rin Tin Tin. People in the Depression wanted something to cheer them up, and they fell in love with a dog and a little girl."
In 1938, at the peak of her fame, a ten-year-old Temple was publicly accused of being an unwitting agent of the Communist Party. Her accuser was Congressman Martin Dies of the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC). Dies' baseless accusation against Temple led to a national outcry which nearly ended Dies' political career. At the peak of this uproar, the Roosevelt Administration intervened and warned Dies not to slander Temple further. (IMDb)
