Apparently, somebody told Facebook we were entertaining, because our posts have been getting a whole lot of attention lately! 👀

We're seeing more views, more likes, more comments, and more folks joining in on the fun. And we LOVE it!

Now, we can't promise every post will be educational, inspirational, or even particularly useful. Some days we're just here to make you laugh. 🤣

Only in Gilchrist County…

Before you talk about somebody, there’s one question you probably ought to ask:

“Who are they kin to?” 😳

Because there’s a pretty good chance the person you’re talking to is their cousin, went to school with their mama, works with their brother, married into the family… or already knows exactly what happened and has heard both versions of the story. 😂

Around here, six degrees of separation is showing off.

We can usually get there in two.

And here’s where it gets tricky…

That person may complain about their cousin all day long.

That does NOT mean you are invited to agree. 😂

They can say he’s crazy, hardheaded and wouldn’t know good sense if it came with instructions.

You say it?

Now you’ve hurt somebody’s feelings and Thanksgiving just got awkward. 😬

The young’uns learn the family connections pretty early, too. With only two K–12 public schools in the county, they’ve got plenty of years to get it sorted out.

By the time dating becomes a thing, somebody in the group usually knows:

“Nope. Y’all are kin.” 😂

And to those of you who’ve moved here recently — welcome to Gilchrist County!

We realize nobody gave you the family tree at the county line.

So until you get everybody sorted out, just assume everybody is somebody’s cousin. 😄

Don’t worry. You’ll catch on.

Before long, you’ll hear a name and find yourself asking:

“Now, which family is that?”

And that’s when you’ll know…

Only in Gilchrist County…

People move to the country because they want a little peace and quiet.

And we absolutely have it.

We just have a slightly different definition of quiet. 😂

Around here, a peaceful evening might include:

Frogs carrying on like they’re being paid by the decibel.
Cicadas providing the background music.
An owl asking “Who?” all night without accepting an answer.
Coyotes somewhere off in the distance suddenly deciding it’s time for a group sing-along.
A cow hollering about something that is apparently VERY important. 🐄
A rooster who has absolutely no understanding of how clocks work.
Dogs responding to all of the above.
And every now and then, something crashing around outside that makes you think…

“I’m not going out there to see what that was.” 😳😂

Then there are the daytime sounds — tractors, lawn mowers, chainsaws, somebody working on something in the shop and the occasional BANG that nobody even bothers asking about.

That’s country quiet.

It doesn’t mean you can’t hear anything.

It means you can hear everything…

you just don’t hear traffic doing it. 😄

And after a while, those frogs, cows, owls and coyotes become the sounds you fall asleep to.

Until one night when everything suddenly goes completely silent…

and THAT’S when the country folks start listening. 👀

❤️💙 Y'ALL REALLY SHOWED UP FOR US! 🪵

We just wanted to take a minute to say THANK YOU for the overwhelming support, kind comments, recommendations, and shares on Wednesday's post!

We were trying to get the word out that, yes, after 47 years, we really DO sell lumber. 😂 What we got in return was a wonderful reminder of just how fortunate we are to be part of this community.

Reading your comments, seeing you recommend us to others, and watching so many of you help spread the word genuinely meant a lot to us.

As a family-owned business, we know that advertising can only go so far. It's the people who shop with us, speak well of us, and tell their friends and neighbors about us who truly make the difference. And we don't take that for granted.

We're certainly not perfect, and we can't always have everything everybody needs, but we do our best to take care of the folks who give us a chance.

🪵 47 YEARS. A WHOLE LUMBER YARD. AND SOMEHOW WE'RE STILL FLYING UNDER THE RADAR! 🤣

We're starting to think we need to hire somebody to stand on the corner of 129 holding a giant board and yelling, "WE SELL LUMBER!" 😂

Recently, we saw a local discussion about where to buy boards for a deck. And it got us thinking...

We've been right here in Bell since 1979. We've advertised in the local newspapers. We've been on the radio. We've talked about our products on Facebook. And yet, somehow, there are still folks who don't realize we have an entire lumber yard behind our store!

Maybe we need to start broadcasting from the roof. 📢

So, for anyone who hasn't ventured beyond our front counter, here's a little reminder of what's out back!

🪵 Pine? Yep!
🪵 Pressure-treated lumber? Absolutely!
🪵 Spruce? Got it!
🪵 Plywood and OSB? You bet!

Different sizes, different lengths, and actual people who can help you figure out what you need.

NOW, LET'S TALK ABOUT THE OTHER ELEPHANT IN THE LUMBER YARD. 🐘

We've also heard the rumor that our prices are sky-high compared to the big-box stores.

Are we always the cheapest? Nope. When somebody buys lumber by the railcar, they can sometimes beat us on certain items. We're not going to pretend otherwise.

But here's what might surprise you: We follow market pricing, and on most items, we're right in line with the competition.

Sometimes we're even less! But you'll never know if you don't compare. 😉

Only in Gilchrist County…

Here’s a little local history that might surprise you.

Back during the Great Depression, the gopher tortoise wasn’t just that fellow you waited patiently on to cross the road.

He was supper. 😳

Gopher tortoises were such an important food source for struggling Florida families that they even earned the nickname “Hoover chicken.”

And according to local history, gophers from our area weren’t necessarily staying local — they were gathered and shipped out to market, where gopher meat was considered quite the delicacy by folks with considerably fancier dinner tables.

Which is where this gets funny…

Our grandparents weren’t sitting around saying:

“Darling, shall we have the gopher this evening?” 🧐

They were trying to survive the Depression.

No caviar.
No escargot.
No fancy menu.

Just:

“We caught a gopher. We’re eating tonight.”

Meanwhile, apparently somebody somewhere was calling it a delicacy. 😂

Imagine finding out decades later that the meal you ate because there wasn’t much else available was somebody else’s idea of fine dining.

Our grandparents weren't poor.

They were farm-to-table before farm-to-table had a marketing department. 😂

Times have changed — and so have the laws. Gopher tortoises are protected in Florida today, so these days when one crosses the road, supper waits for him to get home safely.

Only in Gilchrist County… where even our Depression-era survival food apparently had expensive taste. 😄
