The landscape surrounding the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library was designed to feel connected to the North Dakota Badlands.

Confluence - Landscape Architecture and Snøhetta incorporated restored native landscapes, outdoor spaces and a network of paths that move visitors through the site.

Organic-Lock Stabilized Aggregate (OLSA) was selected for 90,000 square feet of those pathways, with installation by Precision Hardscapes.

The material provides a stable, permeable surface while maintaining the more natural character of the landscape.

The pathway system is one part of a much larger landscape project, but an important one given how much of the visitor experience happens outside the building.

Installing 90,000 square feet of stabilized aggregate requires more than simply placing material on site.

At the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library, Precision Hardscapes worked through a series of steps to prepare and install the Organic-Lock surface, including blending, hydration, screeding, testing and compaction.

Each stage of the process plays a role in the finished surface and its performance.

The project presented its own set of conditions, with an extensive pathway network running through a landscape designed by Confluence - Landscape Architecture and Snøhetta to reflect the character of the surrounding Badlands.

How can campus landscapes help manage stormwater while still supporting everyday use?

This piece explores how flood management and ecological systems can be integrated into campus design rather than treated as separate infrastructure.

A useful read for anyone working on campus landscapes, public spaces, or stormwater-focused design.

The Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library project has been decades in the making.

Planning began years ago, construction started in 2022, and the Library officially opened on July 4, 2026 in Medora, North Dakota.

Designed by Snøhetta and Confluence - Landscape Architecture, the project connects the Library to the surrounding Badlands through restored landscapes, outdoor spaces and an extensive network of paths.

90,000 square feet of Organic-Lock Stabilized Aggregate (OLSA) were installed across the project by Precision Hardscapes.

The scale of the installation was only part of the challenge. The pathways had to work within a landscape shaped by its terrain, native plantings and the larger goal of connecting visitors to the Badlands.

Throughout the next few posts, we'll be taking a look at some of the work that went into the installation.

A 2026 study across 33 permeable pavement sites in six Dutch cities looked at how infiltration performance changes over time.

The results showed that infiltration rates declined as surfaces aged, but remained substantially higher than conventional pavement. The study also highlights how factors like compaction, soil conditions, vegetation, and age can influence performance.

What does it take to turn the top of a highway tunnel into a 14-acre public park?

At Presidio Tunnel Tops in San Francisco, the landscape reconnects the historic Presidio with the waterfront through wide, curving trails, native coastal gardens, gathering spaces, and panoramic views.

Designed by James Corner Field Operations, the park needed pathways that could handle heavy foot traffic while fitting naturally into the surrounding landscape. Organic-Lock Stabilized Aggregate was selected for the trail network, providing firm, accessible footing with a natural appearance and permeability to help manage runoff across the sculpted slopes.

Opened in 2022, Presidio Tunnel Tops has become a major public destination in San Francisco.

A great example of how the right pathway material can support both the experience of a landscape and the demands of a heavily used public space.

Over the years, we’ve had the opportunity to work with Kafka Granite on projects across the country, bringing Organic-Lock Stabilized Aggregate together with their wide range of high-quality natural aggregates.

From public parks and pathways to distinctive landscape environments, these projects show how the right aggregate can become an integral part of the design.

Here are a few of the projects we’ve had the privilege of working on together.

What happens when you need trees to grow through an aggregate surface, without compromising its stability?

At the Guardians of the First Amendment Memorial, Bald Cypress trees were designed directly within the Organic-Lock Blended Aggregate field (OLBA).

Moody Graham, Stancills, Oldetowne Landscape Architects and Organic-Lock's technical team worked together to develop the installation detail.

The solution used structural soil as both the base and growing medium around the tree pits, creating enough air space for healthy root development while maintaining the strength and stability needed for pedestrian traffic.

The result was a uniform surface that allows the trees and pathway to function together.

And the design has now had a chance to prove itself.

Despite increased pedestrian circulation and flooding, the project team reports that wear paths haven't formed in the pavement.

They also found maintenance easier than with other aggregate products because the material “doesn't travel.”

This is what collaboration between landscape architects, suppliers, installers and technical specialists can make possible: a solution developed specifically for the conditions of the site.

In Antofagasta, Chile, René Schneider Park responds to an entirely different challenge: an arid, steep landscape with scarce rainfall, intense solar radiation, and erosion risks.

The project uses vegetation as living infrastructure, helping stabilize slopes, provide shade, manage water, and strengthen biodiversity, while integrating accessible routes and spaces for the surrounding community.
