WOODCRAFT of Minneapolis, MN

WOODCRAFT of Minneapolis, MN All your woodworking needs in one location including a full line of hand tools, power tools and acce Timothy and Katherine purchased Woodcraft in 2012.

Timothy's background was mainly in database programming. His career as a programmer was nearing an end and he realized he wanted to do something different - like making and building things. This passion led him to an artisan furniture making internship in Chicago with the sculptor and furniture designer, David Orth. When Timothy made his way back to Minneapolis, he eventually became the store mana

ger of Woodcraft, a franchise based out of West Virginia. He and his wife bought the store when the previous owner decided to retire. Now they run it together with a great group of folks!

For today’s winner we have Best Finish. This award is sponsored by Woodcraft.
This is my reproduction of one of the most famous and finest chairs made in colonial Philadelphia. It is a unique style in 18th Century chair design with the serpentine front rail and sideways dip. It was commissioned by General John Cadwalader as part of large suite of furniture in 1769. The hairy-paw feet are one of the unique and iconic features of the Cadwalader suite in general and this chair in particular. The construction of this chair is significantly more complicated than others because of the seat rail curves and the 3-part back splat. I have plans to make another version of this chair as well as two or three other pieces from the suite. Upholstery by Matt Nafranowicz

Cadwalader Saddle Chair

Maker: Tony Kubalak
Materials: Mahogany
Dimensions: 23” W x 37” H x 22.5” D

When you are a woodworker often you have to make things for yourself to complete the project. With this project that won the Glenn Gordon Award it was a set of hand planes.
built two #8 (radius 8/16=1/2”) hollow and round planes 3 years ago as part of a class. While making box handles last summer, I decided I needed a pair of #12 (12/16=3/4”) hollow and rounds, so I bought plans, European beech blanks, and O-1 steel blade blanks and made a second set last summer

Hollows and Rounds

Maker: Charles Finne
Materials: European Beech and O-1 steel

Simple things done well were not only the main theme of the Shakers but were the reason that this project won Best Traditional Piece in the 2026 Northern Woods
This stand is a copy of an inspired piece of Shaker furniture. The original stand was probably made in the 1820s but its simple design is timeless. Its yellow color is pure Shaker, too. While they believed that “beauty rests in utility” and forbade the use of carvings and moldings, the Shakers often painted their furniture in bright, transparent colors. The outline of the stand’s legs are true ellipses. While most plans for the stand show the legs drawn on a grid, I used the same method to lay them out that the original designer must have used: three nails and a length of string. The legs are attached to the post with sliding dovetails. Made by hand, this must have been a job for only a master craftsman. I’m pretty good with hand tools, but to make truly tight joints, I used a route

Let’s take a spin with the project that won Best Turning
PersonMadeMallet: Elastomeric urethane resin bonds brass shavings with a stainless steel core and shaft to make a compact and dense mallet with just enough dampening to prevent damage to tool handles. Comfortably held by the shaft or nestled in your palm. Equally well suited to carving, chopping joinery, and other blunt object striking. Made with brass shavings from machining crafty knife hardware.
Crafty Knives: Replaceable blade knives for woodworking or whatever you might find to use them for. Like an Xacto, but really freaking nice. Groenke has made over 800 of these things since 2020 and somehow he’s still challenged and entertained by making them.
Pointy Tools: Awls and needle holder for layout, marking, small part handling, sliver removal, super glue nozzle cleaning, and whathaveyou. 6in1 Screwdriver: Like any other 6in1 screwdriver, but much more expensive! Because makers deserve tools as nice as what they make with them.

Tools For Makers Who Like Nice Things

Maker: Kevin Groenke
Materials: Bolivian Rosewood, Brass and Urethane Resin
Dimensions: Varies by piece
Finish: Odie’s Oil and paste wax
