Mother’s Day 2026
I would like to start by wishing everyone out there a Happy Mother’s Day. It’s a day that we should all cherish. Mother’s Day is always a hard day for me. It never really starts to hit me until I go to the market and pick up “Barbara’s daisies”. That was mom’s gift every year. She loved trips to the market. Just to go look at all the beautiful flowers popping out to start the season. This year the weather was beautiful and the place was packed. My mother would have been lost for hours searching through all the new blooms. Her love for flowers sure rubbed off on me. I can’t ever leave there without getting a few new additions.

This Mother’s Day is the 7th without her in my life. It really does hurt not having her in my life anymore. I think when I miss her most, I wind up in the garden planting or moving something around. That seems to bring me closer to her. I also hit the kitchen and whip something up. A favorite phrase of hers (and now mine) is “ did you eat?” If you know me, you know.

Now the reason for this post. Please stop by the store on Mother’s Day and pick up a beautiful Barbara’s Daisy in memory of my mother. They are free of charge and just require some sun, water, and a little love. It will bring a smile to me and I’m sure mom when I hand it over. Lastly, think of all of the moms that are gone when you care for it.

Here we go again. When I first started this adventure, “Small Business Saturday” didn’t exist. It was thought up by the people from American Express in 2010 and, I must say, it’s a beautiful thing. Many of you participate and show your support, which I think is fantastic.

Shopping small was the way of life 31 years ago, when I bought the store. Walking into a mom-and-pop shop was the norm. Personal and friendly sales experience was everywhere. I knew all the local shop owners and always chose to support them over big-box companies.

Online shopping and mega companies like Ama… exploded during COVID. Many people were forced to shop online and stay out of our beloved small stores. All the big boxes remained open while small shops crumbled. It created a recipe for disaster and completely changed the way we do business. And it took the human element out of shopping.

If you’re still reading my yearly rant, I’d like to put a positive spin on things….

Firstly, thank you so much to our loyal customers who continue to keep us afloat. Homeowners and local contractors have always been the reason we remain in business. Scottie and I are grateful every time that door swings open. We are constantly waiting for the challenge of the day. Please keep testing us - we need to stay sharp.

Nothing is better than working on a small project or even a social visit.

I am also grateful for having found a friend and co-worker like Scottie. He has been my sidekick and brother for over 25 years now. We pick each other up and argue like an old married couple. We truly are a dream team.

You may know that I attend many community meetings to keep our neighborhood safe. I care very much for what happens in my “back yard,” and I couldn’t do that without Scottie’s help.

Marine Park Hardware was established in 1926. I reestablished the name in 1994 when I purchased the business from my mentors Frank and Andy. They are gone now, but I will never forget the opportunity they gave me.

Next year, we will be celebrating the store's 100th Anniversary 🤞🏻 I can’t believe it either. It’s been open and operating in the same spot for as long as the neighborhood has existed. Thinking about all the customers who have shopped here over the last 100 years is mind-blowing. I will be partnering with some of my distributors and local shops for a HUGE celebration. Please keep an eye out for details of our celebration as warmer weather arrives. In true Momma B fashion, I will be feeding the masses.

This Sunday makes 6 Mother’s Days without my mom. It seems like the years are flying by. Never would I have believed my elders when the told me, blink and it’s gone. As I get older, I feel the time slipping away faster. Just a few days ago I heard a Mother’s Day commercial and realized it was time again to hit the market for “Barbara’s daisies”.

For those of you who are still lucky enough to have a mother, or mother figure in your life don’t miss this opportunity to cherish them. Make a real effort to get together, share a meal, or spend hours talking on the phone. I guarantee you that’s something you will always look back on when they are gone.

All I have left are the slowly fading memories of past years spent. Those memories often make me laugh or cry. My mother was an amazing woman. Taught me so many things without even having to say a word. Her look could tell you everything you needed to know. She was quiet, caring, compassionate, honest, and huge hearted. Someone who would cure all life’s troubles with a baked ziti, or something she whipped together just for you.

I still keep those tradition’s alive today.
I can remember hundreds of times hearing mom in the kitchen before the sun rose putting together a meal for someone “in need”. Her true love’s were cooking and gardening. I’m sure dozens of people can attest to the “ I made you a something” call. (Almost always a baked ziti) maybe next year in her honor I’ll cook too!!

Getting to the reason why I’m writing today. Please stop by tomorrow for my Mother’s Day tradition. Pick up a beautiful Ge**er Daisy and watch it grow. They will continue to bloom all summer long. As mom would say “don’t forget the water”. I hope when you look over at them you can see the smile on my mom’s face too.

For all of you who come back every year - it means the world to me. Thank you for helping keep her legacy alive.
