REMOTE SOD PROGRAMMING BEST PRACTICES

THIS IS TO ENSURE A HIGH DEGREE OF PROGRAMMING SUCCESS AND TO CUT DOWN ON PROGRAMMING TIME TO SAVE MONEY AND INCREASE PRODUCTIVITY.

1. Ensure your smart programming power supply can handle at least 70 AMPS of ripple-free DC voltage and is rated for FLASH programming and has adjustable voltage. If you haven’t purchased a smart programming power supply in the past 5-7 years, yours is likely not adequate for modern European vehicles. We cannot assist you if vehicle voltage for programming is not within manufacturer’s specifications. Contact us for suitable programming power supply options: https://www.iscantech.com/ps-m2/

2. Make sure you begin conditioning the battery well before programming. As a rule, set the programming power supply to flash program on the vehicle at least 30 minutes to 1 hour before programming is set to commence. This ensures a fully charged battery prior to programming.

3. Always check for updates on your iSCAN before any programming. Update all available APP – VEHICLE – SYSTEM updates before submitting your SOD request.

4. High heat is a problem for module programming. Always make sure the iSCAN is well ventilated, not in direct sunlight and for warmer climates (especially in the summer months), have a fan blowing air on the iSCAN before and during programming. Have the iSCAN tilted up and never directly on it’s back as the cooling ports are on the back of the device. It is a good idea to leave the iSCAN powered OFF before a programming event as a unit left on for an extended period of time will run hot. Anything above 65 degrees Celsius is a potential issue. You can find the internal temperature of the device within SETUP.

5. Slow internet speeds will cause programming failures and delays which can increase programming time and costs. Always check your download speeds and latency. Anything below 10 MBPS download or above 150 MS of latency can cause issues. You can check your internet connection within RESOURCES – INTERNET SPEED TEST. It is always a good idea to periodically reboot your router(s) and any network devices to improve internet speeds. Doing a network reboot before programming is always recommended. SOD providers reserve the right to decline programming assistance if internet speeds are not to a minimum standard.

6. Proper vehicle setup is very important:

a. Always connect the programming power supply to the positive jump post and the negative ground post under the hood.
b. If you do not have a jump post under the hood and your only option is to connect directly to the battery it is ok to connect the positive terminal on the battery but never connect the negative terminal directly to the battery, always find a chassis ground connection.
c. For BMW F & G chassis, you must connect to your network via WiFi only (no Ethernet as it will conflict with the vehicle’s DoIP network), latch the driver’s seat belt, turn off all loads and maintain at least 13.8 V at the DLC (as displayed on the iSCAN).
d. For Mercedes-Benz, you must turn the windshield wipers to the off position before programming.
e. For any DoIP vehicle and iSCAN 3 or SF, (BMW/MINI, Land Rover, Mercedes, Volvo, etc.) the iSCAN can only be connected to a network via WiFi as an Ethernet connection will conflict with the vehicle’s Ethernet based communication protocol.
f. If you have a 48 volt mild hybrid vehicle, make sure that the 48 volt system is fully charged before programming. Those vehicles will always take voltage from a programming power supply to re-charge the 48 volt battery before maintaining adequate programming voltage within the 12 volt system. You may have to leave the charger on for multiple hours before the 48 volt battery is fully charged and stable, programming voltage is possible at the DLC.
g. The vehicle’s start-up battery and 48v batteries State of Charge should always be monitored via a scan tool prior to ensure State of Charge and contactor are within specifications. Never directly connect a maintainer or charger to the vehicle’s 48v battery. Maximum charging amperage at the Start-up battery should never exceed 25A from a proper smart maintainer or charger if charging is needed and applicable while the ignition is OFF.

7. Used module programming: Anytime we attempt to program a used module, there are uncertainties of the module’s condition, compatibility with the vehicle and if used module programming is possible. We consider these types of events as chargeable programming events, pass or fail.

iSCAN NX is a professional automotive diagnostic, coding, and programming platform designed to give independent repair shops more ways to handle advanced vehicle service in-house.

Beyond everyday scan tool functions like fault code diagnosis, live data, component testing, and pre- and post-scans, iSCAN NX is built for the jobs that become more challenging as vehicles get more complex: adaptations, initializations, calibrations, module coding, and module programming.

One of the biggest advantages is having multiple approaches to coding and programming from a single platform.

iSCAN NX offers native onboard coding and programming capabilities for supported BMW, MINI, Rolls-Royce, Mercedes-Benz, and Land Rover applications. Depending on the vehicle and system, technicians can perform individual module programming, restore original coding or programming data, and work with certain used replacement modules.

For shops that want to use OE software directly, the iSCAN NX VCI can also provide pass-thru capability through J2534 and IMS2 OE-specific VCI emulation. Supported IMS2 applications include interfaces and workflows for BMW, Volkswagen/Audi, Jaguar Land Rover, Volvo, Mercedes-Benz, and Porsche.

And when a job goes beyond what you want to handle yourself, SOD, Support On Demand, gives your shop another option.

SOD connects technicians with experienced remote diagnostic and programming providers when advanced help is needed. The system uses OE-specific communication protocols rather than relying on one standardized remote method across every vehicle manufacturer, providing greater flexibility for complex programming and diagnostic work.

No single scan tool can do everything. The advantage of iSCAN NX is having more options when difficult jobs come through the door: native diagnostics and programming, access to OE software through the VCI, and remote expert support when needed.

The goal is simple: keep more diagnostics, coding, programming, and difficult repair work in your shop instead of turning it away or sending it somewhere else.

Mercedes-Benz DAS3 EIS No Start - No Crank - Testing Made Simple

Mercedes-Benz DAS3 no crank condition? You can go beyond scan data and verify exactly what's happening between the Electronic Ignition Switch (EIS) and the Electronic Steering Lock (ESL).

In this quick diagnostic tip, we demonstrate how a 4-channel lab scope can be used to analyze the EIS to ESL communication circuit on supported Mercedes-Benz vehicles.

By monitoring:
• Terminal 30 battery supply
• Terminal 30z switched supply
• Ground
• The EIS data line

you can determine whether the EIS is transmitting authorization commands and isolate whether the fault lies with the EIS, ESL, or the communication path between them.

Combined with iSCAN NX drive authorization PIDs, this testing strategy provides OE-level insight into Mercedes-Benz DAS3 no-start complaints and helps eliminate unnecessary parts replacement.

Mercedes EIS and ESL Diagnosis Tip Every Tech Should Know

A Mercedes-Benz no crank complaint can quickly become an expensive mistake if you replace the wrong drive authorization component.

On DAS3-equipped vehicles like the W204, the Electronic Ignition Switch (EIS) and Electronic Steering Lock (ESL) work together to authorize vehicle start. Because both components can create similar symptoms, replacing the EIS before confirming the actual fault can introduce additional programming and authorization complications that didn't exist before.

In this short, we show how iSCAN NX drive authorization data can help you identify whether the fault points toward the EIS or ESL before ordering parts.

Using scan data and circuit testing first can prevent unnecessary component replacement, reduce programming headaches, and save both your shop and your customer time and money.

Mercedes DAS3 No Start Diagnosis in 30 Seconds

Mercedes-Benz no crank condition? Before replacing expensive components, check the drive authorization data.

Using iSCAN NX, technicians can quickly differentiate between an EIS (Electronic Ignition Switch) fault and an ESL (Electronic Steering Lock) fault by monitoring three key data parameters in the Drive Authorization menu.

Watch PID 9, PID 10, and PID 11:
• PID 9 – A Valid Key Was Detected
• PID 10 – Start Enable for Control Unit ESL Is Issued
• PID 11 – Start Enable for Control Unit ME

If all three remain NO, suspect the EIS.

If PID 9 switches to YES, but PID 10 and PID 11 remain NO, suspect the ESL.

This simple test can save hours of diagnosis, prevent unnecessary parts replacement, and help you accurately diagnose Mercedes-Benz DAS3 no-start complaints.

Mercedes-Benz No Start No Crank? This Driver Display Message Is a Diagnostic Clue

"Take your key from ignition."

Most Mercedes-Benz owners ignore this message. Technicians shouldn't.

On DAS3-equipped Mercedes-Benz vehicles like the W204, this instrument cluster message confirms that the Electronic Ignition Switch (EIS) has successfully recognized and authenticated the remote key.

If the message appears, the key and EIS are communicating. If it doesn't, the EIS may not be recognizing the key, making this one of the quickest checks you can perform during a Mercedes no crank or no start diagnosis.

This video also shows how to confirm the result using iSCAN NX drive authorization data by monitoring:
• PID 9 – A Valid Key Was Detected
• PID 10 – Start Enable for Control Unit ESL Is Issued

Understanding these clues can help you narrow down Mercedes DAS3 faults before replacing expensive components.

Applicable to supported Mercedes-Benz DAS3 systems.

Mercedes FBS4 Programming Made Easy with iSCAN NX Y Cable - 722.9 VGS4 Used Transmission Programming

Modern Mercedes Benz FBS4 security systems have added complexity to transmission programming, ECU replacement, and drive authorization procedures. Tasks that once required factory tools and strict OE workflows can now be completed more efficiently using iSCAN NX together with the iSCAN Y-cable system and built in coding and programming functions.

This video demonstrates how iSCAN NX can simplify Mercedes FBS4 programming by allowing technicians to transfer drive authorization data from an original ECU to a replacement module, including supported used donor components.

One of the most valuable applications is Mercedes transmission replacement. Using the iSCAN EM-C1 Y-cable together with the MB-V4N2-C1 component cable for the 722.9 VGS4 conductor plate, technicians can transfer transmission data from the original module to a replacement ECU before final commissioning. This allows complete used transmission assemblies to be installed and commissioned without relying on traditional factory restrictions.

The process uses simultaneous communication with the vehicle and replacement module through the Y-cable connection, helping shops complete advanced Mercedes transmission repairs in-house.

The video also discusses future cable support, including additional component cables planned for Mercedes 725 9 speed transmission conductor plates and other aftermarket applications as demand grows.

For independent shops working on Mercedes Benz vehicles, the ability to recover modules, transfer drive authorization data, and commission replacement ECUs directly through the iSCAN NX can significantly reduce downtime and eliminate dependence on systems that limit repair flexibility.
