Warmer Temps Ahead — What to Watch For
From your friends at NEHS Hardware
After weeks of single digits and below-zero temperatures, we’re heading into the 20s and low 30s with a possible 40's on Tuesday.
While that sounds nice to some folks, this type of warm-up can create some tricky conditions—especially with our deep, compacted snowpack.
Here’s what to keep an eye on:
Packed snow turning slick
Compacted snow doesn’t melt evenly. The surface softens, but the base stays frozen, making sidewalks, driveways, and parking areas very slippery.
Water pooling over ice
With the ground still frozen, meltwater can’t drain. Puddles often form on top of solid ice, hiding dangerous slip spots.
Snow and ice shifting from roofs
As snow loosens, heavy chunks can slide off suddenly—especially in the afternoon when temperatures peak.
Refreeze overnight
What melts during the day can refreeze at night, creating glare ice by morning.
Water moving toward foundations
Slow-melting snow can push water toward doorways, basements, and low spots where it can refreeze or cause issues.
These temperature swings can be sneaky. Taking a little extra care now can help prevent falls and damage later.
