Are your tools failing prematurely in Inconel®, Waspaloy®, Hastelloy®, or other heat-resistant superalloys?

When machining HRSAs, slowing down may seem like the right move, but it can actually lead to more rubbing, work hardening, heat buildup, and premature tool wear.

In our newest Tips and Chips episode, Andy Greaves and Justin Wilkes break down what makes these materials so challenging, along with the tooling geometries, coatings, coolant strategies, and machining techniques that can help improve tool life and process stability.

Watch the full video to learn how to better approach milling, drilling, and turning nickel-based alloys and other difficult heat-resistant materials.

Choosing insert geometry isn't just about sharp vs. dull. It is entirely about how forces are applied to the machine and the workpiece.

Positive (CCMT): Acts like a sharp knife. It reduces cutting forces, making it the standard for Swiss-type machines, small diameter boring, and gummy materials.

Negative (CNMG): Acts like a wedge. It requires more horsepower and rigidity, but the massive carbide support withstands extreme heavy-duty roughing. Plus, being double-sided means twice the cutting edges.

Not all insert shapes are created equal. Sharp V and D-style inserts are great for profiling but they come at a cost. If part geometry allows, switching to a square or C-style insert could save you money AND give you a more predictable cut. Here's how to choose right. https://bit.ly/3PGwmme

Inconsistent tool life. Bad surface finish. Unexplained insert failures. Stop tweaking your parameters, the real problem is your insert geometry.

Have you ever had a turning job where everything looked right on paper but performance still fell short?

The issue probably wasn't your speeds or feeds. It was your insert geometry.

Insert geometry is a system: shape, lead angle, cutting forces, chip flow, and tool life all interact with each other. Yet most machinists select inserts by habit rather than intention.

Our latest video breaks down the system-level interactions that allow geometry changes to solve problems that feeds and speeds simply can't.
