On this Memorial Day, we take a moment to pause.
To reflect.
To remember.

We honor the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to something greater than themselves.
Their sacrifice is the reason we enjoy the freedoms and opportunities we have today.

At Kyocera SGS Precision Tools, we’re grateful, and we remember.

Can one coating work for both aluminum and Inconel? Not effectively.

Aluminum performs best with smooth, low-friction coatings that reduce built-up edge, resist chip welding, and support clean chip evacuation. Inconel requires a very different defense. It needs harder, heat-resistant coatings that can withstand extreme temperatures, oxidation, and edge wear under demanding cutting conditions.

A single coating may be able to cut both, but it will usually be a compromise in both applications. When performance matters, coating selection should match the material, the heat load, and the cutting environment.

Same material. Different drill. Completely different parameters.

In Ti-6Al-4V, a standard coolant-through drill may start near 170 SFM / 0.007 IPR, while a flat-bottom drill often runs closer to 130 SFM / 0.005 IPR to manage higher forces and interrupted cuts.

Geometry drives performance. Setup makes it work.

The standard twist drill is the most common drilling tool in the shop.

It self-centers, runs fast, clears chips efficiently, and performs reliably in straight through holes in aluminum, mild steel, cast iron, and many everyday applications.

For stable setups and straight drilling, a standard drill is often the right tool.

Drill geometry directly affects chip formation, heat control, stability, and hole accuracy. Features like point angle, chisel edge, flute design, and margins determine whether your process runs smoothly or creates unnecessary wear and scrap.

The right geometry improves chip evacuation, reduces cutting pressure, and delivers cleaner, straighter holes.

Before adjusting speeds and feeds, evaluate the tool design.

Standard, straight flute, or flat bottom carbide drill, which one’s right for the job?

The difference isn’t subtle, and choosing the wrong geometry can cost you tool life, hole quality, and cycle time.

In this video, you’ll learn when a standard twist drill is the right choice, when a flat-bottom drill solves problems on angled or intersecting holes, and why straight flute drills excel in abrasive, hard, or thin-wall applications.
