UTV/ATV on Iowa Roadways:
SMV Signage & Legal Requirements
The Clayton County Sheriff’s Office has recently received several inquiries regarding the requirement of Slow Moving Vehicle (SMV) signs on UTVs/ATVs operating on public roads. This follows a recent enforcement push in another jurisdiction.
✅ The short answer: YES.
According to Iowa Code § 321.383, any UTV or ATV operated on state or county roads must display a reflective SMV device visible from the rear.
This is primarily due to the 35 mph speed restriction on these vehicles, placing them under the SMV category. The size and design of the SMV emblem must comply with American Society of Agricultural Engineers standards.
Please remember—these laws exist to keep everyone safe on the roads. For those needing an SMV sign, support your local businesses that carry these reflective devices and ensure your vehicle is road-compliant.

Stay safe out there, Clayton County!
