Stella Liu joined the 2026 Focus Program with the aim of making a career change. Over ten weeks this summer, she honed her engraving skills, progressing from the Basic class to Scroll Design and Lettering. Stella's passion for learning was evident. When she wasn't engraving under the microscope, she was busy drawing and pushing her creative boundaries.

She channeled all this knowledge into creating what we believe is the coolest business card in history! This hand-engraved final project is a testament to her extraordinary skill and meticulous attention to detail. Robert Scarpati has an extensive and successful background in engraving, fabrication, and tattooing. However, he wanted to expand his skill set by adding stone setting to the services he offers his existing customers and to venture into the lucrative jewelry industry. To do so, Robert chose the Focus Program to broaden his expertise. Over the course of 10 weeks, Robert developed his skills in various styles of stone setting and successfully incorporated his knowledge and influences into an impressive final project: a one-of-a-kind pinky ring. Robert carved the wax, engraved, and set all the stones. This ring will serve as a traveling portfolio of his work. Robert, it was a pleasure to get to know you this summer and witness your progress from those first rough plates to the wonderful pavé setting you showcased at the end of the program. Students showcased some impressive engraving work at the Training Center this week! In Todd Daniels' Decorative Setting class, they created stunning embellishments using Art Deco-inspired patterns. Each student added their personal touch, resulting in unique interpretations of the style.

In Rex Pedersen's Basic Metal Engraving class, students achieved clean cuts by the end of the week, with several plates featuring eye-catching Western-style designs.

We wrapped up our final Basic Stone Setting class on the 2026 schedule this week! Led by Kevin Biehn, our students had a blast learning prong, flush, bead, and channel setting techniques with round and princess-cut stones. We loved seeing some creative engravings around the set stones. A big thank you to the hardworking and fun group that spent these five amazing days with us in Emporia!
