Less daylight. Just as much litter. 🍂 Fall is a great time for a community cleanup, but earlier sunsets mean your team needs a plan.

Here are a few ways to make every hour count:
✅ Start earlier. Morning events give you the most usable light and tend to draw more volunteers.
✅ If you have a later day cleanup, check the sunset time for your location and plan to wrap up at least an hour before it.
✅ Build in buffer time for check-in, bagging, and haul-out so nobody’s finishing in the dark.
✅ Prep supplies ahead. Have grabbers, bags, and gloves ready to hand out so volunteers can get to work right away.
✅ Pack hi-vis gear in case things run long and visibility drops.

Preparing for your fall cleanup event looks a little different than preparing for other seasons.

▶️ Here's a few helpful fall cleanup prep tips:

1. Check your gear before the first event. ✅ Pull out your grabbers, gloves, and buckets and give them a once-over. Make sure jaws close tight, handles aren’t cracked, and gloves still fit. Replace anything worn now so you’re not scrambling on cleanup day.

2. Dress for changing weather. 👕 Fall mornings can start cold and warm up fast. Wear layers you can shed, waterproof shoes or boots for wet leaves and mud, and bright colors so drivers can see you along roadsides.

3. Watch for what leaves can hide. 🍂 Fallen leaves cover up sharp objects, glass, and needles. Use a grabber instead of your hands to sift through leaf piles, and bring a sturdy container for anything sharp.

4. Plan for shorter days. 🌞 Daylight disappears earlier this time of year. Schedule cleanups for mid-morning or early afternoon, keep track of sunset times, and carry a flashlight or headlamp if you’re working late.

Give your volunteers a role. 📝

When your volunteers arrive to your event, you should already know what roles need to be assigned and who you would like to do those roles.

Some common roles include:
➡️ Site captain
➡️ Group leader
➡️ Handing out supplies
➡️ Handing out water/food
➡️ Safety coordinator
➡️ Photographer

But the roles don't stop there! Each organizer will have different needs. Assigning roles will help your event run smoother, and give your volunteers a specific purpose.
