Fort Chaffee never closed. In 1995 the Army transferred part of it to the state, and about 7,000 acres became Chaffee Crossing. Fort Chaffee itself is still an active Army installation.

The F-35 pilot training is at Ebbing Air National Guard Base, next door but separate. Save this for the next time someone says the fort closed.

Fort Smith permits are down 13.1% this year: $177.4 million in permitted construction value through September, versus $204.2 million a year ago.

But the $1.3 billion I-49 section, the pilot training center at Ebbing Air National Guard Base and Fort Smith's sewer consent decree work are not in those numbers.
