The people pushing gun bans are showing up to vote. We need to show up, too.
Everytown and its Moms Demand Action network, Giffords PAC, and Brady PAC are organizing voters and backing candidates who will pass more restrictions. They’re working to get their people elected. Sitting this out makes their job easier.
Eleven states have already enacted “assault weapon” bans covering semiautomatic ri**es. Those laws took votes to pass, and the people casting those votes had to get elected first.
That’s why this matters all the way down the ballot. A seat in Congress comes with a vote on federal gun laws. State lawmakers can put the next gun control bill on a governor’s desk to sign or veto. Mayors and city councils can push local restrictions where state law allows. Look at what these candidates want to do with that power.
In Texas’ 23rd Congressional District, Brandon Herrera opposes new fi***rm restrictions and supports national concealed-carry reciprocity. His opponent Katy Padilla Stout supports universal background checks, red-flag laws, and a bump-stock ban.
In California, Xavier Becerra wants the governor’s office after defending magazine limits and am******on background checks and joining Giffords in suing the ATF over 80% frames and receivers. Steve Hilton has pledged an executive order directing state government to comply with the Second Amendment.
In Minnesota, Amy Klobuchar supports an “assault weapon” ban. Her opponent for governor, Lisa Demuth has the Minnesota Gun Owners PAC’s endorsement.
And in Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, York, and Reading have passed local restrictions targeting unfinished frames and receivers. City Hall matters too.
We cannot keep sitting out elections and expecting a lawsuit to fix everything afterward. If you don’t vote, other voters choose who gets that power.
Read their records. Vote for candidates who will defend the Second Amendment when an actual vote is on the line.
Check your registration and state deadlines at Vote.gov. Show up for local elections too.
