Cleaning historic masonry requires a careful balance between removing biological growth and protecting the original material.

Biological cleaning systems allow contaminants to break down gradually without damaging the surface or introducing harsh chemicals.

One of the most widely used solutions in historic preservation is D/2 Biological Solution, trusted by conservation professionals, cemeteries, and public institutions across the United States.

As an authorized distributor, US Heritage Group works with D/2 Biological Solution to support restoration professionals with cleaning systems specifically suited for historic masonry and stone conservation.

Historic masonry rarely fails without warning.

Long before a repair is considered, the wall usually shows signs of what is happening beneath the surface. Cracking patterns, moisture staining, surface erosion, and salt deposits are not random defects — they are signals.

These signals reveal how the wall manages moisture, how materials respond to stress, and how previous repairs have affected the system over time.

Learning to recognize these patterns helps professionals understand the real problem before choosing a repair method or material. Without that understanding, even well-intended repairs can introduce new stresses or trap moisture where it should be allowed to move.

Products may offer solutions, but the wall defines the problem.

Responsible restoration begins with learning to read the masonry itself.

Responsible restoration starts with understanding how historic masonry actually works — not with choosing a product.

Too many failures begin with repairs that look correct at the time but ignore how the wall manages moisture, movement, and stress. Historic masonry systems were never designed to work with rigid, impermeable materials or quick fixes.

Before any mortar is mixed or any repair begins, professionals need to ask the right questions about compatibility, exposure, and long-term performance.

When those questions are skipped, problems may not appear immediately — but they almost always show up years later.

Thank you to the professionals who joined us for the May 6–8 in-house training.
Three days of practical work focused on lime putty mortar installation, Level 1 and Level 2 stone repair, and material compatibility under real-world conditions.
We appreciate the experience, attention, and judgment each participant brought into the workshop. The discussions reflected a shared commitment to responsible preservation practice and to work intended to perform over the long term.
👉 We look forward to seeing these standards carried forward into future projects.

Mortar selection is not a catalog decision.
Before selecting any formulation, we evaluate the following:

✔ Original composition: binder type, aggregate grading, color and mineral structure, original ratio, and workmanship

✔ Physical behavior: relative strength and hardness, flexibility, v***r permeability, moisture transfer patterns

✔ Environmental exposure: freeze–thaw cycles, salt exposure, orientation and weathering, long-term maintenance realities

Historic masonry performs as a system. A repair mortar must support that system — not override it.
The goal is not to choose the strongest material. The goal is to choose the most compatible one.

Most masonry failures are not caused by age alone.

They begin when incompatible materials change how a wall manages moisture, movement, and stress.

Traditional Building Magazine recently published an article featuring U.S. Heritage Group and our work with lime-based mortars, material compatibility, masonry analysis, and long-term performance in historic restoration.

U.S. Heritage Group manufactures lime-based mortars, plasters, and masonry repair materials for historic preservation, offering mortar analysis, technical support, and training to ensure compatible, long-lasting restoration.

Most people look at historic brick buildings and notice the brick.

Architects often look at the joints.

But conservators know that mortar is what truly defines the wall.

The color, grain size, binder composition, and permeability of mortar determine not only how a façade looks — but also how it performs over time.

When mortar is replaced with something incompatible, the consequences can be subtle at first:

- hairline cracking, trapped moisture, and spalling brick faces.

On this project, our team developed multiple mortar samples to match the original joints in color, aggregate texture, and permeability. Each sample was tested directly on the façade to evaluate how it behaves in natural light and alongside the historic brick.

Because successful restoration is not about making the repair visible.
It’s about making it disappear.

And sometimes the most important material on a building is the one people rarely notice.

Specifications define parameters.

Experience teaches judgment.

In the field, you begin to recognize patterns that no manual can fully explain — subtle moisture behavior, material resistance, surface response, and the way historic masonry communicates stress.

These lessons are tactile, observational, and cumulative. They cannot be absorbed through theory alone.

Hands-on training exists to develop that kind of understanding — where knowledge becomes decision-making.

Upcoming May 2026 trainings:

▪ Lime Putty Mortar Installer Certification Training — 06.05
▪ Stone Repair Certification Training – Level 1 — 07.05
▪ Stone Repair Certification Training – Level 2 — 08.05

Designed for professionals working with historic masonry who want to deepen practical understanding in real-world conditions.

Due to strong demand for spring sessions, we’ve opened an additional in-house training in May.

The May 6–8 session is already 50% booked (6 of 12 spots filled).

This 3-day training is designed for professionals working with historic masonry and focuses on:

• Lime putty mortar installation
• Stone repair (Level 1 & Level 2)
• Material compatibility and long-term performance

The group size is intentionally limited to allow for direct, hands-on instruction and real-time decision-making.

📍 US Heritage Group Training Center, Franklin Park, IL

This training is not product-driven — it focuses on how materials actually behave over time in historic structures.

If you’ve been planning to attend a session this spring, now is a good time to secure your spot.
