Don’t let the delicate white blooms fool you. Poison hemlock is highly toxic.

Megan Clayton, AgriLife Extension range specialist and professor in the Texas A&M Department of Rangeland, Wildlife and Fisheries Management, warns that this invasive plant can be found across North America in roadside ditches, pastures and even backyards.

All parts of the plant are toxic to humans and livestock and can be fatal if ingested. Knowing how to identify it and avoid contact is key.

Invasive hornets are spreading globally and incursions in the USA keep happening. We are currently fighting the yellow-legged hornet (YLH) 𝘝𝘦𝘴𝘱𝘢 𝘷𝘦𝘭𝘶𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘢 in SC and GA, an invasive hornet that impacts beehives. Though it was reported to be a one-off, a live yellow legged hornet was found recently aboard a cargo ship in the port of Vancouver, Washington.

The more we can learn from places that YLH occurs, the better we can hope to prevent invasive species from establishing and spreading. Once established, fighting the effects of invasive hornets in apiaries is crucial for beekeeping operations. There is a new resource available on our website about managing honey bee colonies in regions where the YLH is established. This manual shows how beekeepers protect their apiaries from YLH, and is good evidence for why we need to stop the YLH establishment and spread in North America.

Although there are no solutions that can fully guarantee the protection of beehives against this threat, this document presents various methods, techniques, and recommendations that may help reduce the damage hornets cause to honey bee colonies.

PAm's Research Program Director Dr. Maria Marta Guarna collaborated with Dr. Ana Diéguez Antón at the Universidad de Vigo in Galicia, Spain to create the English version of this resource.
