SARATOGA TRUNKS: here are several trunk catalog pages that show what true Saratoga trunks were according to the trunk makers. Pages from 1875, 1885, 1897, and 1914. From all of these trunk maker catalogs, a true Saratoga trunk was a large barrel or round top trunk, including the Cross Slat style patented in 1880. The name came about because travelers going to Saratoga Springs, NY (a very popular resort location during the 1800's) would take a very large trunk to hold clothes for their long stays. People started referring to the very large trunks, usually barrel top types, as Saratoga trunks.

Hello Trunkers! I thought you may be interested to know that Taylor Trunks of Chicago did make small trunks also, and not just the large ones that are much more common to see. Here are a few pictures from an early 1900's Taylor catalog so you can see what was made and what to look for! Also, one picture of a Taylor Ticket Trunk in my collection. It was used by Pearl Tangley who called herself the Mental Marvel. She would perform in traveling shows, carnivals, etc. so people would put their tickets in her trunk by the tent or room door. Enjoy!

Many mid to late 1800's trunk maker labels and catalogs list "valises" as one of their products. Some folks aren't sure what that was but here is a nice example from the Civil War period. A valise was a small hand carried case and later versions became known as a suitcase. This one was owned by Lemuel Chandler from Berlin, VT. He served in the Civil War and later became the police chief in his home town, passing away in 1918.
This has a small brass lock, some brass "buttons", rolled leather handles, and is leather covered with some nice "tooled" decoration. The lines are not painted but are formed by leather tools and pressed into the leather while it is dampened. The body has a wood frame and heavy cardboard under the leather.
