The story of East Side Lumberyard takes us back to the latter years of the Great Depression in St. Louis, MO, and follows the dreams of a young accountant named Ralph G. Reis was working for Reis-Moran lumber company, his father’s business, when a unique and life-changing opportunity presented itself. At the time, livestock haulers would deliver livestock to East St. Louis and cross the river to pick up building materials and bring them back to Illinois for sale. Then the Illinois State Commerce Commission changed the current law and prohibited the livestock haulers from crossing the river to bring materials back to Illinois. At this point Mule-Hide roofing company approached Reis-Moran Lumber about opening a branch on the Illinois side to distribute their products. The proposition wasn’t particularly appealing to Ralph’s father, but he himself saw a real potential for growth and prosperity. With his father’s blessing, and some of his money, Ralph G. Reis sought out four other investors to support his new business venture. Once the financing was in place Mr. Reis proceeded with the business. In 1939, nestled in an old sauerkraut factory in East St. Louis, Illinois, just across the river from the family business Ralph grew up in, East Side Lumberyard Supply Co. Within a few years Mr. Reis was able to buy out his partners and take full control over the business. Ralph G. Reis took his strong work ethic, his faith-based principals, and commitment to excellence and made them the foundation of his business. Today, East Side Lumberyard Supply Co, Inc. is one of the most respected and relied upon building materials suppliers in the Midwest. As we wrap up another year, East Side had their annual Christmas luncheon. Today was about celebrating the people who make this company what it is. The hard work, long days, teamwork, and sense of humor that somehow survives it all.
