In 1910, two enterprising young tool-and-die makers named Duncan Black and Alonzo Decker were tired of working for others so they started their own shop…Black & Decker, Inc. After just a few years in business, they came up with a new idea for a power drill.

Power drills up to that point were heavy and difficult to operate. Theirs was shaped like a pistol and had a trigger switch. Black & Decker took the drill to market in 1916, selling only to professionals. By 1919, three years after introduction, they were doing a million dollars in Sales!

In spite of all their success, Black & Decker was still not a household name as it is now. In 1946, the company launched a line of low-priced portable power tools to the consumer. It was launched under the brand “Home Utility." Their new portable electric power drill sold for $16.95. This and many other consumer products… Dustbuster, ScrubBrusher, WorkMate, etc., are what made Black & Decker the household name it is today!
