MORE THAN A HARDWARE STORE: BAKER FARM AND HARDWARE HAS A LITTLE BIT OF EVERYTHING
KENNETT, Mo. — From farm supplies to custom paint, Baker Farm and Hardware offers something for nearly everyone.
For Charolyn and Charley Hilburn, their family-owned business at 1023 Homecrest Street is about more than selling merchandise.
It's about offering customers a dependable selection, personal service and a friendly face when they walk through the door.
"Customer service is what we have," Charolyn said. "When you walk in the door, someone's gonna meet you there to help you."
One of the store's newest attractions is its expanded paint center, featuring computerized color matching and a wide selection of painting supplies.
"Last November, we invested quite a bit in the paint department," Charolyn said. "We got a new computer matching system, where you can bring in your paint swatch, and we can match it."
The department offers Clark+Kensington and Royal paints at different price points.
Joey Yount, formerly of True Value, oversees the operation.
"He's really good at paint," Charolyn said. "It has been an amazing add-on for us."
Another major attraction is the store's full line of Milwaukee tools and accessories, with a recently redesigned department serving farmers, mechanics, contractors and homeowners.
"Milwaukee, we just redid that whole section," Charolyn said. "We sell a ton of tools."
Although agriculture remains the business's foundation, the merchandise extends far beyond the farm.
Customers will find Carhartt clothing, work boots, YETI coolers, Costa sunglasses, candles, cleaning products, lawn equipment and household hardware.
The store also offers key duplication, propane tank refills and equipment rentals, including carpet shampooers, engine hoists and sewer snakes.
For farmers, the selection includes tillage supplies, hydraulic fittings, spray tips, oil, antifreeze and everyday agricultural necessities.
Planting and harvest are particularly busy seasons.
Longtime agricultural customers can also maintain monthly charge accounts, an old-fashioned convenience the Hilburns continue to offer.
The business began in 1967 as Delta Tractor Supply, founded by Charley's great-grandfather, Charlie Baker.
It became Baker Farm and Hardware in 1981, joining the Ace Hardware network.
The Hilburns assumed ownership in the mid-1990s and maintain close ties with the family's Baker Implement locations throughout the region.
