Our tile leaves the factory already sealed. That is where the protection starts, not where it ends.

Every piece is sealed here before it is boxed, which carries it through storage, shipping and handling on site. What that first seal cannot do is protect the floor once it is laid, because the moment that matters most for staining is grouting, and grouting happens after the tile is already down.

So the job needs two more coats, and the order is the part people get wrong. The first goes on after the tile is set and before any grout touches it, so the grout cannot take hold in the face of the tile. The second goes on after grouting, over tile and grout lines together, once the surface is completely dry and clean of any residue.

One rule worth using today: write both coats into the installer’s scope as two separate line items, not as one line that says seal the floor. A single line gets read as one coat at the end, and by then the grout haze is already in the tile.

Swipe to see it in three rooms. The person who lays this floor finishes the pattern, not the factory.

Every tile in the box is identical: a black band that steps across the face on the diagonal. On its own it looks like nothing. The figure, an octagon with a white cross at its centre, only appears when four tiles meet and each one is turned a quarter turn from its neighbour. The factory makes the piece. The installer makes the pattern.

That is unusual enough to change how you plan the job. The first four tiles decide the whole floor, because every figure after them is set by where that first group lands. Start in the centre of the room, dry lay the first group, and look at it from the doorway before anything is fixed.

One rule worth using today: have your installer dry lay a full square metre and photograph it from standing height before mixing any adhesive. A pattern that closes on the floor can still land badly against a threshold or a cabinet run, and that is far easier to move now than later.

Every tile in your order passed through somebody's hands.

Not a line and not a program. A room full of people, a press worked by hand, one piece at a time. That is where the slight variation between tiles comes from, and it is why the floor looks the way it does once it is down.

Swipe to see the room it comes from.

Strong contrast can make even a compact reception counter memorable.

The black-and-cream diagonal repeat gives this simple shape movement, creating a focal point at the first moment of arrival.

One tile of this floor tells you exactly what the whole floor will look like. That is rarer than it sounds.

On a lot of cement tile the drawing only closes when four pieces meet, so the single sample your supplier sends you is a fragment, and the floor you approve is not the floor you get. Rombos Gris is the other kind. The diamond is complete inside each 8x8 tile, edge to edge, which means the sample in your hand is the finished product at full scale.

That changes three things on site. You can approve from one piece instead of a mock-up. The layout has no starting point to get wrong, because there is no group to line up. And where the floor meets a wall you cut straight through a tile without breaking a figure in half, so the perimeter looks intentional rather than salvaged.
