Baker Ace Hardware

Baker Ace Hardware Great Location, Great Service, Great products In 1909, his son Lewis joined him, and from 1912 operated it as a partnership with J.J. Sullivans' interest.

Baker Hardwares' roots in Lincoln go back to the late 1860s, on the corner of 9th and O St, where it remained until 1972 when we moved to our current location at 8th and N St, in the South Haymarket. Starting with Dr. Gilberts' Drugs, Medicines, Paints, Oils, Books, Stationary and Hardware, which became Humphrey Brothers, then Nebraska Hardware in 1905 with several shareholders, one by the name o

f Leon Baker in 1907. In 1909 he controlled retail operations, formed Baker Hardware, and became the first Baker to own and operate the company. Sullivan, until 1940 when Lewis bought out Mr. Richard White went to work at Baker Hardware during high school and continued until he graduated from Teachers College. During this time he met and married Constance Baker, one of four daughters, and they moved to Fargo where Richard had accepted a teaching position. This lasted one winter when Constance informed Richard he could stay there if he liked, but SHE was coming back to Lincoln. He was soon back working at Baker Hardware, and in 1949 started his own company within the Baker building selling to home builders and general contractors. In June of 1962, Richard and Constance bought the business from Lewis. In 1966 Baker Hardware began a long relationship with the True Value family of stores. In 1972 Baker Hardware moved from 9th and O St, after a presence of over 100 years, to make
room for the Hilton Hotel, now the Holiday Inn. Richard passed away in 1982 and Dave and Larry White continue as our 4th Generation owners today after guiding us into the Ace Hardware brand in 2000.

It seems the Hardware Gods may be conspiring against us. This is the prediction for Monday, the day of our much anticipated "We May Be Closed But That Can't Stop Our Christmas Party" party. To all the employees, Dave and I will be monitoring the situation closely, probably over cocktails and appetizers someplace, tomorrow and Monday, and may have to postpone the gala. We will let everyone know as early as possible, so if someone calls you with very slurred speech, it's just us.

** Significant Snow POSSIBLE Sunday Night-Monday Night, But There Is Still Time For The Forecast to Change! **

Fortunately, other than a little light freezing drizzle or flurries mainly this morning, there is not expected to be much in the way of measurable precipitation today. The biggest story today will likely end up being strengthening north-northwest winds behind a passing cold front, with sustained speeds this afternoon and evening up around 30 MPH at times, with gusts to around 40 MPH. Tonight, parts of mainly North Central Kansas could see a light dusting of snow, but for the most part precipitation-free conditions will continue right on through Sunday across the local area.

Attention then turns to the Sunday night through Monday night time frame, which has the potential to feature a somewhat significant snow event across the region. Although it is still a few days away and is certainly subject to some forecast changes between now and then, it currently appears that the local area could receive generally 2 to 7 inches of snow, most of which is expected to fall during the day Monday. The higher amounts are currently expected to favor eastern portions of the area, such as the Highway 81 corridor from Columbus to Hebron and southward into north central Kansas, with lesser amounts out west toward places such as Lexington, Arapahoe and Phillipsburg.

Beyond this potential snow-maker, precipitation-free conditions are expected to prevail during most of the Tuesday through Friday time frame next week. However, December will continue to end on a rather cold note, with daytime highs mainly only reaching the 20s for the next several days.

As the Christmas season approaches, we think back to how we all loved this season of ice melt, shovels, hand warmers and snow throwers. But we also have come to realize there is something else we all miss. FREE calendars! If anyone would like to donate a nice 2016 calendar to an old employee or 2, let me know. Delivery would be nice, but I can arrange pick-up.

I had thought I was doing pretty good getting out for a bike ride in the evening for some exercise, until today. I happened upon Tim walking to work this morning! Good for you Tim. That has to be a pretty good hike from your house.
