During winter, low moisture (low relative humidity) is one of the most common causes of wood floor problems. Because wood is hygroscopic (it gains and loses moisture with the air), dry winter conditions can lead to several issues:

Main issues caused by low moisture content

1. Gaps between boards
As humidity drops, wood loses moisture and shrinks. This causes visible gaps between planks, especially noticeable in solid hardwood floors.

2. Cracking and checking
Boards can develop surface cracks, splits, or “checks” when they dry too quickly or excessively. This can happen across the grain or along the length of the board.

3. Cupping reversal / Over-drying stress
While cupping is usually linked to excess moisture, extreme dryness can create internal stress that weakens the wood, sometimes leading to future movement problems when humidity rises again.

4. Squeaking and noise
As boards shrink, fasteners loosen slightly. This increased movement can cause floors to squeak or creak when walked on.

5. Finish damage
Low moisture can cause the wood to shrink away from the finish, leading to:
• Finish cracking
• Edge fracturing
• Separations where bare wood becomes visible

6. End gaps and separation at transitions
You’ll often see gaps at butt joints, thresholds, and along baseboards as the floor contracts during dry winter months.

7. Reduced long-term stability
Repeated seasonal over-drying can weaken the wood fibers over time, making the floor more prone to permanent gaps or structural issues in future seasons.

The best practices to prevent winter damage
• Keep relative humidity between 30%–50%
• Maintain consistent indoor temperatures (below ~75°F)
• Use a whole-home or room humidifier
• Allow proper acclimation before installation
