Your floor isn’t broken. It’s just alive.

Wood expands. Wood contracts. That’s not a defect that’s the material doing exactly what it’s supposed to do.

Small gaps? Normal.

A little movement? Expected.

What’s NOT normal is excessive gaps, warping, or buckling. That’s usually poor installation, bad materials, or a climate control issue not the floor itself.

Know the difference before you panic. ‼️

Your hardwood floor moves. And that’s completely normal.

Wood is a hygroscopic material it naturally expands when humidity rises and contracts when it drops.

According to MWFA guidelines, the ideal indoor environment for hardwood floors is 30–50% relative humidity and 60–80°F year-round.

Seasonal changes outside that range cause the wood to gain or lose moisture and the floor reacts.

What you’ll see: small gaps between planks during the drier heating season. That’s the floor contracting. Completely normal. Completely expected.
What’s NOT normal: wide gaps, warping, buckling, or cupping. Those point to installation issues, subfloor problems, or inadequate climate control and that’s worth a conversation.
