There is a marked difference in the finished product when large solid timbers are used on porches and patios!

If you are not wanting to see exposed fasteners/brackets, you can recess timber screws and plug the holes for a clean finished look. 

Pictured here are sanded and stained Cypress and some Douglas Fir in the raw immediately after plugging. They will clean up nicely with a orbital sander!

Here are some good examples of air and water sealing taken seriously.

Sill plates are known for air leakage. You can stop air, bugs and moisture using liquid flashing. 

Also notorious for water damage, are window sills or any penetrations through the sheathing layer. All stub outs should be waterproofed!

Prosoco R-Guard and Huber Liquid flash are good products for these applications.

This floating staircase is a good example of the forethought that goes into the small details in a custom home.

The base plate for the stringer was recessed into the slab when the foundation was poured, creating a seamless transition of the stringer coming up through the tile floor.

Weld plates in the walls were recessed by routing pockets in the blocking. The screw holes in the plates were counter sunk to allow the drywall to be finished clean with no visible hardware after welding.

Certainly not the fastest, cheapest, or easiest way to install floating stairs, but the clean lines and quality of the finished product are well worth it.
