As you prepare your building for winter, let’s talk about coatings.

Did you know coatings are not intended for weather-tightness? They are formulated to extend the life of the existing metal panel finish.

Often used improperly, a coating is simply a Band-Aid over a much bigger problem.

Severe corrosion, failing fasteners, excessive thermal movement, compromised panels, penetrations, and underlying structural concerns aren’t necessarily solved by covering the surface. A coating may temporarily address certain symptoms, but it won’t make a structurally compromised roof sound again.

At some point, another temporary fix may just delay the solution your building actually needs. That’s where metal-over-metal retrofit can provide another option—allowing an engineered new metal roof system to be installed over the existing roof without a complete tear-off.

As temperatures drop, metal roof panels naturally contract—and when temperatures rise again, they expand. Over long panel runs and repeated temperature swings, that movement can be significant.

That’s why the components underneath the roof matter just as much as the panels above.

High quality, standing seam, floating clips are designed to securely attach the roof while allowing controlled thermal movement. Without the right clip system, that movement can introduce unnecessary stress into the panels and connections, potentially contributing to distortion, oil canning, or premature system issues.

Our standard one-year warranty goes beyond proper fabrication—it reflects the quality and traceability built into every Roof Hugger component.

Roof Hugger® sub-purlins are manufactured from high-strength 50 ksi minimum, 16-gauge, 0.060" minimum thickness, G-90 galvanized steel and are made exclusively from certified U.S.- manufactured steel. Every part is marked for traceability back to its original source steel coil, and components are warranted to be accurately fabricated for the specific panel profile intended.

How does a Roof Hugger retrofit actually come together? 👀🔩

It starts with the existing metal roof and builds from there.

1️⃣ Inspect & prepare the existing roof — confirm the roof profile, framing, and project requirements.

2️⃣ Install Roof Hugger sub-purlins — factory-notched sub-purlins fit over the existing roof ribs.

3️⃣ Fasten into the structural purlins below — creating a secure engineered attachment point.

4️⃣ Add insulation if specified — the retrofit assembly can create space for additional insulation.

5️⃣ Install the new metal roof — the new panels attach to the Roof Hugger system above the existing roof.

6️⃣ Keep the building protected below — no full tear-off, less disruption, and a new metal roof built on what’s already there.
