Explanation of this Seal was found in Virginia Masonic Herald, article Aug. 1958. Seal of the Architectural Society of Greater Virginia 1778. βMy Hope is in God." Europe Asia Africa are the continents. The circle of hands on either side of Europe Asia Africa represents the "Universality of Masonry." Symbols are the bee hive, the level, the plumb and the twenty four inch gauge and the two Saints John, the anchor, square and compasses, the three steps, the forty seventh problem of Euclid and the triangle, the two altars all familiar Masonic symbols. The Elephant has no Masonic significance. "Unless he is to be Elephanta the ancient temple where the Mysteries of India were celebrated, according to tradition this is the most ancient temple in the world.β VDCCLXXVIII the first V has a line on top. A line drawn over the first V represents 5,000, D=500, CC= 200, L=50, XX=20, VIII=8 for a total of 5778 (1778).
