** Meeting Alert **
Join us Tuesday, June 9th at 7:30PM at Our Lady of Hope.
We already have one local hot-button issue presentation confirmed, which will include a brief Q&A session led by the presenters, and local elected officials will be on hand to address the audience.
We’ll be covering several important topics, including:
- The NineDot battery storage facility
- Hostile street takeovers in our community
- Homelessness and a recent uptick in suspected drug activity in residential areas
- Cyber Bullying and How to Deal With Known Antgonists
(And no — despite rumors, we won’t actually be spending the entire meeting on Saint Saviour’s )
All the Best Paul Pogozelski
We hope to see you there. Your voice matters!

One of our members recently reported, with photos, that a homeless individual was sleeping on the corner of Furmanville Avenue and Dry Harbor Road in the business district. They contacted 311 and were informed that the Department of Homeless Services has been notified and will respond.

There have been several similar incidents reported at the park over the past few weekends. It appears we may be facing a challenging summer, with growing concerns about responsiveness and accountability. Many residents are beginning to question what the future holds for Middle Village—and the city as a whole.

At the same time, it’s important to recognize that the individual in this situation likely needs support. Access to safe shelter, along with expanded mental health services, should be a priority in future city budget discussions so that people can receive the help they need.

Our next meeting is scheduled for early June.

Service Hours Alert

We know it’s been a while since our last live meeting in February. Ongoing issues outside our control—like IBX, the Nine Dot battery facility, and recent public safety concerns—are still unfolding, so we’re planning to reconvene in early June.

In the meantime, we’re focusing on what we can do: building community and taking action locally. Join us for our first cleanup of the year with local elected officials Joseph Addabbo, Andrew Hevesi along with Dorie Optiz Figliola we restore the Vietnam Memorial ahead of Memorial Day.

More updates soon—stay tuned.

*** CALL TO ACTION ****

Protest on Thursday: “Protect Our Kids”
Aside from the tone-deaf placement of a lithium battery storage facility in the middle of a residential neighborhood, this site is surrounded by homes, schools, and local businesses.
Through civic engagement, we’ve connected with neighbors near 57–77 Rust Street in Maspeth. After visiting the location, myself, I noticed a persistent humming noise coming from the facility. This constant sound is a nuisance and raises concerns about the long-term impact on residents’ quality of life.
No family should have to live next to or across from an industrial energy storage facility that abuts their homes. The site is visually intrusive, and residents are understandably concerned about potential long-term effects related to noise, electromagnetic exposure, and vibration.
We are told that Nine Dot Energy has the legal right to use this property as approved. But what about the rights of homeowners, business owners, and students in the area?
• The school was not built next to an existing industrial plant.
• Homeowners did not purchase their properties knowing this was a possibility.
• Local businesses were established long before this facility was introduced.
The Right to Quiet Enjoyment
“Quiet enjoyment” generally means the right to:
• Live in your home without unreasonable interference
• Expect privacy
• Be free from excessive noise or disruption
• Use your property legally without intrusion
For homeowners, protections may come through:
• Nuisance law
• Local zoning and noise ordinances
• Environmental and land use regulations
Local attorneys are now reviewing the situation to help protect our community. We want to ensure that when decisions affect residents’ health, safety, and quality of life, there is accountability and proper oversight.
This is about balance. Clean energy matters — but so do neighborhoods, families, and children. Community voices deserve to be heard.

Building permits have been filed for a lithium battery storage facility near PS 128.

A large-scale battery site does not belong next to our school and homes. Safety, and transparency, must come first.

Let’s come together as a community and tell NineDot: this is not an acceptable location.

“We need to stop trying to stop the IBX line completely. The money [for congestion pricing infrastructure] was earmarked, they put it in and it came to fruition, but all the local legislators all said it was never going to happen,” Pogozelski said. “If the legislators were a little more proactive, they would have been able to get those counters moved one block. Instead of saying ‘It’s never going to happen, or it’s not going to happen in our lifetime,’ I think it’s more important to say ‘How are we going to get ahead of these issues?'”

TUESDAY 2-10-26: CIVIC ENGAGEMENT COMMITTEE ZOOM MEETING WITH THE RED CROSS:

Thank you to Timothy Chubinidze from Borough President Donovan Richards’ Office. It is an honor to represent the Middle Village Residents Association as a member of the Queens Civic Engagement Committee.
It was very informative listening to Gary Chin from the American Red Cross. The discussion focused on fire prevention, especially as we have just experienced another home fire in our community, as well as emergency readiness and the Red Cross’s involvement in assisting families during times of crisis.

THE DSNY – NY’S STRONGEST
My post yesterday came from concerns raised by many neighbors and a lack of communication around sanitation services. It was never meant to criticize the men and women of the DSNY.
To be clear: DSNY workers are not the problem. Many live in our community, and I know firsthand the sacrifice, long hours, and physical toll this job demands—especially during snow emergencies and the pandemic. They deserve respect, support, and better pay.
The frustration is with leadership and communication. Streets and walkways have remained snowed in for weeks, alleyway pickups were suspended, and residents were not informed. The community understands prioritizing worker safety; they’re upset because no one explained what was changing or why.
Transparency matters. Clear communication would have gone a long way.
It’s also a safety concern to expect DSNY staff to climb over snowbanks between parked cars to collect garbage.
DSNY staff are not at fault, and no blame was ever directed at them. I apologize if my earlier post came across that way.
For follow-up, DSNY is responsive via 311 and on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/nycsanitation

-Stay tuned as we engage with the 108th Precinct regarding their efforts in our community and the importance of addressing internal concerns alongside external initiatives.
