We get a lot of questions about our adhesive, so we wanted to share some information about it.
1. We manufacture our own adhesive that is specific to RWD.
2. Our adhesive is chemically formulated to bond to the window when applied correctly and left to set up for 12 hours.
3. We use a slight layer of foam between the adhesive for two reasons: it allows for a small amount of expansion and contraction for better weather durability, and the foam adds a protective layer that ensures water does not get through.
4. Water WILL NOT permeate the adhesive when installed correctly.
Common installation errors we’ve seen include the following:
• Not using enough of the adhesive. The adhesive is 3/4” wide, and if you’re not using at least 1/2” of it, you’re simply not getting enough surface bite.
• Applying RWD to a dirty surface. You must clean the window using 100% denatured alcohol before applying the trim.
• Cutting the trim too long. It’s always good practice to cut the trim about 1/16” short to allow for expansion. Some installers cut the trim a little too long and try to force it into place. While that might work in the moment, it causes too much pressure and prevents the adhesive from bonding properly, which can cause it to pop off later.
• Not applying enough pressure. Once you stick the trim to the window, apply firm pressure with a roller or your hand across the entire strip. This ensures the chemical bonding process activates evenly across the adhesive and sets up properly.
• Installing in cold conditions. If it’s cold outside, bring the trim indoors to acclimate before applying it to the window. If you’re installing outdoors on a very cold day, use a heat gun to gently warm the window surface before application.
Lastly, if you notice a little bit of “memory” in the trim, it’s always good to slightly back-bend the ends before installation. If applied correctly, you shouldn’t have any issues—but it never hurts to back-bend just a little to remove coil memory.
