It has been quite awhile since I added anything to this page. Life has been just a little hectic in general and my focus has been elsewhere for quite a time now. But I have a few minutes today so I thought I'd put something up here.

This is a project we completed back in April. The entire frame is cypress that had been stained prior to frame assembly. unlike most of our projects the material was used green, as opposed to kiln dried, because the size of the timbers and the fact that they are cypress meant the drying time would have been many months rather than a few weeks which is typical of other softwood timbers like pine and fir. We also felt that since this structure is exterior, the expected shrinkage and checking of the timbers would not be a problem.

The decking is Southern Pine, also stained, that we milled here. And before anyone asks, all the pergola timber have flashing on top of them even thought that has only been installed over the large beam when when we finished. The steel pipe columns under the timber posts have been encased in stone that matches the stone already in place.

TBT project from the files. This is a pool house we did fifteen years ago outside of Dallas. For the building footprint this may have the most material and complication in the fewest square feet of our bevy of past projects.

In 1983 we raised our first, and what we thought would be our last, timber frame in Trinity, Texas. That event almost immediately spawned a company called Red Suspenders Timber Frames as some folks who saw that event and the end product asked us to build one for them. Thirty eight years and about 200 timber frames later we were back in Trinty, Texas where last week we raised the timber frame pictured below. So, either life has come full circle for us or we've mange to get about four miles in nearly four decades.

As we close out the year we're putting the finishing touches on a kiln dried southern yellow pine frame that is going up on Lake Livingston, Texas in January. Have a wonderful holiday season!

TBT: We completed this home back in 1996. The frame is reclaimed Douglas fir from an old sawmill in Washington State. The total square footage is just about 2,000. It was the subject of an article in "Timber Frame Homes" magazine in 2004.

It's been a rather long time since I did one of these posts so here you go! This is a home we designed and did the timber frame for in Colorado a few year ago. The frame is kiln dried Southern Yellow Pine. As you may be able to tell from the flags, high winds were something we had to design the frame to withstand. The nearly 100 PSF snow load was also an issue.

TBT: This is a home we designed and did the timber frame for near Johnson City, Texas along the Perdenales River. It was featured in Luxury Log Homes and Timber Frames magazine back in 2004. It's hard to believe it was that long ago.

We just completed our latest project here at Red Suspenders. It is a great room timber frame for personal friends of ours here in Nacogdoches. It's yellow pine that we sawed, dried, planed and crafted here. Special thanks to Jim Holzknecht, Robert Hinton, Arvel Aldridge and Keith Boen for the fine work you did and great attitude you had throughout. As always it's a pleasure working with you.

It's been some time since I posted anything here. It's been busy at this end and time has gotten away from me. We have two projects in the shop and another two on the way. The latest required us to saw the timbers for the project as the mills that generally supply our materials were all way behind due to the effect of Hurricane Harvey. Here are a few images of the logs we started with and the timbers we made from them. It's all Southern Yellow Pine. The long timber shown is a nearly clear 9x13x32' stick. Right now that piece is in one of our kilns drying. In another three weeks or so it should be in the shop and before the end of the year will be in a home under construction here in Nacogdoches County.

FYI, our web host ran into some issues migrating our site to their new server. We found out about and rectified that this morning. The website should be back up and visible in a few hours. We apologize for any inconvenience or confusion.

Once again I took a trip through our archives and came across these images of a home we designed and did the timber frame for in SE Oklahoma around 2002.
