ANTIQUE ALERT!
Look at these stunners.
We truly never know what vintage treasures are going to grace our floor.
As the story goes, years ago, a private collector and woodworker acquired these gorgeous, high-end French door pairs in New York, intending to install them in his 1930s Connecticut home.
This week, he donated them to ReCONN!
Standing nearly 7’5” tall, these beauties appear to be custom-built, with solid wood stiles and rails, intricate moldings, and richly figured burl-wood veneer inlays. True statement doors.
Look closely at the group photo. There is a truly unique pair suited ENTIRELY in the burl veneer. They close completely flush to be a hidden door, one has its gorgeous, original MARBLE baseboard. Where did these doors lead?
Nicole says, they’re screaming bougie 1920s speakeasy.
Naturally, all of our volunteers spent a few moments each showing each other and geeking out over the craftsmanship.
“Have you SEEN the new doors?!”
“Wow. Where’d we find these?”
“Could that be redwood burl and mahogany?”
“The internet says walnut but the internet link of the matched picture sends me to a cat video so I don’t think I trust it. I’ll keep looking.”
“Those are SPECIAL. Which cat video?”
“They GIVE heavy.”
“They’re ARE heavy.”
“They LOOK heavy.”
Heavy: 12 doors, 600+ lbs of gorgeous hardwood leaning against portions of our 100-year-old retired Stanley Steel factory like chonky dominoes.
They’re not for sale just yet!
We’re dusting, measuring, inspecting hardware, and playing a very heavy game of matchmaking. Even doors built as matching pairs can vary slightly in dimensions, so we need to identify their true partners before the hardware will line up.
Nicole and Wade nearly perished sorting through the stack this morning.
