NYH started just before, and was shaped and defined by, Hurricane Irene. Originally our goal was to sustainably manage forests to improve their vibrancy and create wood products from dying/diseased trees that were culled. In the wake of Irene and then Sandy, the model quickly refocused on local and ecological resilience through collecting and processing trees from our community in order to get them into peoples homes and out of over-capacity landfills and chippers (chipping results in the quick release of carbon into the atmosphere).
If you have friends or family down south recovering from Hurricane Helene that might need some guidance on how to creatively deal with their downed trees, please offer that they can DM or email us. There is some healing that can be found in the making of things (though we recognize it will be a long road for many before is even conceivable). And from our dear pals in Asheville, if you need ideas for how to contribute, try or .
