A group of about 25 students from SUN Area Technical School’s carpentry and welding classes visited Zartman Construction on Wednesday morning. The students were given instruction on hand signaling for cranes and taught about the various types of equipment used for rigging. The students were also given hands-on encounters with three typical crane and rigging scenarios in the commercial construction field. At one station students were asked to create a rigging sling for materials to be transported to the top of a miniature pre-fabricated metal building. At another station students were asked to rig metal beams to be lifted to a structural steel building frame. The final station gave students the opportunity to tie rebar before placing a section of a concrete form. Each student was given the opportunity to rig or signal the crane operator.
“We are very appreciative of the opportunity to showcase the different types of work that Zartman does in hopes that students will choose to join our team,” said Tim Clark, Vice President of Operations. “SUN Tech does an excellent job of setting up students with the skills they need to enter a trade.”
“I hear many people that I speak with about today’s labor force is not what it used to be. More of our local employers like Zartman are taking the initiative to become more involved in committees, training, and career events in local vocational programs and schools,” explained Eric Turofski, School to Career Coordinator at SUN Area Technical School. “They understand that if you want a good employee, you must invest beforehand and show them the opportunities that are out there to potential workers.”
