Born 136 Years Ago Today in Kansas, the “Granddaddy of the Hillbillies” and One of Country Music’s First Full-Time Songwriters

Initially referred to as “hillbilly music,” country music’s influence exploded following the radio’s invention in the 1920s. In May 1924, Vernon Dalhart scored the first nationwide country hit with “Wreck of the Old ’97”. Another artist to emerge during this decade was Carson Robison, who accompanied Dalhart on guitar, harmonica, whistling, and harmony vocals on that landmark recording.

Happy birthday to the man who inspired our name, Woody Guthrie.
Boxcar Woody was named as a tribute to Woody Guthrie, an Oklahoma legend whose music gave a voice to hardworking people, travelers, dreamers, and those simply trying to build a better life. His songs carried stories of the road, the railroad, and the American spirit, all things that continue to inspire who we are today.
We are proud to carry a small piece of his name and Oklahoma history with us.

As we celebrate America’s 250th birthday, we’re taking a couple of days to slow down, spend time with our families, and appreciate the freedoms that make it possible to do what we love every day.
Boxcar Woody will be closed July 3rd and July 4th as we celebrate Independence Day. We’ll return to regular business hours on Monday, July 6th.
