Nitrogen-strengthened austenitic stainless steel is prized for marine, cryogenic and pressure applications. But welding it has one big headache: nitrogen escapes the weld pool, dragging down strength and leaving porosity.

Researchers led by Suzhou University just tested a clever fix โ€” MIG welding inside a pressurized chamber (100โ€“180 kPa) โ€” with striking results:

๐Ÿ”น Weld nitrogen content up from 0.54% to 0.60%
๐Ÿ”น Porosity collapsed: pores fell from 22 to just 3
๐Ÿ”น Yield strength climbed from ~300 MPa to over 700 MPa
๐Ÿ”น Peak tensile strength reached 924.1 MPa
๐Ÿ”น Nitrogen solubility rises from 0.81% to 1.01% under pressure
